When the Last Autumn came in 1885, The Fledgling German Empire, barely even Nine Years in the making, had been caught severely flat-footed. What few Generators they built, had barely been completed just before the storm, yet it was not enough.
The problem was not a Lack of Warmth or Manpower, but of Fuel and sustanence. Germany itself was set on land that could not grow Grains very well, and the Frigid winter had damned much of the Woods that could have provided an alternative to Coal, much of the mines having been lost to the Snow and Ice, as well as certain regions being lost to the cold. If no new or alternative source was found, then what remains of the German Empire would succumb to the cold within a year if they managed to stretch it.
It would be a month into the frost when an odd discovery was made off the remains of Rotenberg, one being a Mechanized Giant, a Humanoid Automaton well beyond anything possible of the British Empire, the other, being a smaller, nearly man-sized automation, with the frozen body of a Man inside of it. Autopsies would reveal he SHOULD have been in his late forties, but he looked no older than his Twenties, and checks of his equipment not only revealed technology beyond the Advanced British Empire, but also a strange gel-like fluid, glowing as warm as the Pre-Great Frost beaches in the warmest of summers.
Research into this mysterious 'Thermal Fluid', would prove a mix of wonder, yet also frustration. The 'Thermal Fluid' when exposed to the cold air, had a short lifespan of only minutes before it evaporated into nothingness, and while warm to the touch, the amount that could be acquired, was only able to fill a small Jug, and there was no known way of replicating it.
It wasn't until a mistake was made, where a Researcher in a state of severe sleep depravition, mixed up a vial of 'Thermal Fluid' with a Cup of water meant for the Ark seedlings, only realizing it when an assistant asked. An inquiry was launched, the Researcher who made the Blunder was Courtmarshaled, and the rest of the Researchers were in tizzy in figuring out where the Sample had gone.
It was the same assistant who realized where, upon seeing a group of Sunflower seedlings not only sprouting incredibly fast, but also noticing their glowing orange veins and hardened Stems. This led to the discovery that the 'Thermal Fluid' was actually a Symbiotic Colony that when metabolized, can induce growth, produce heat, and generate energy.
However, in an impure state, such as being squeezed from plants, the effects would cause mutation, Mindlessness, or a berserk feral state that cannot be controlled.
The Thermal Energy Harvester, Nicknamed "Der Reaper", proved a Godsend, allowing for the relatively quick harvesting of thermal energy from the T-ENG Plants, while also allowing for the Purification of the Gathered Thermal Energy. Developed from autopsies into the Mechanized Giant, affectionally nicknamed "Fornjótr", "Der Reaper" works by shooting a Condensed pulse of energy from the three 'barrels' to 'capture' T-Eng, to which the Energy pulse reflects back unto the receiver set between the Triple barrels, where it gets condensed and processed within the Gun's purifier unit.
Disturbingly enough, T-ENG can be produced by 'Der Reaper', from shooting certain living creatures with it... Anthros and Humans being just TWO of the richer sources. Such actions are deemed an absolute last resort, as being shot by 'Der Reaper' is stated to cause horrific injury and induce incredible pain prior to their demise, via the victim being described as 'being mummified' in the aftermath of a Lethal shot.
The only reason it's not completely illegal to own 'Der Reaper', is due in part to the Tool/Weapon's short range of Ten metres, and because the device requires regulated Arcwave Cells.
Yeah, I'm kinda dipping my toe into Frostpunk a little. I kinda like the concept of the World, Bleak as it is, it has a LOT of possible Stories and X-Overs.
This idea is based off stories I stumbled upon in Wattpad (Not Frostpunk based), as well as lore from Lost Planet and Fall of Cybertron, and concepts of Gears of War via how Imulsion works.
