Fall, 1424
Four exhausting days of climbing later and the rebels finally reached the top of Kearsarge Pass. As the bulk of the army rested nearby and the scouts continued to reconnoiter the trail ahead, the Arcadian leadership rode up to a prominent rocky promontory to survey the landscape. Arrayed below them were the fertile farmlands of Alba, bracketed in the distance by the giant shimmering ribbon that was the Alba River sluggishly working its way to Betakinin Sound. Sitting atop their horses, Jayna and Chagraff silently took it all in with awe.
"We actually made it." Jayna finally uttered.
"Not quite. We still need to descend the mountains." Mera casually interrupted as he basked atop a large boulder. The other commanders, Roza, Cutler, Mower and Olgel milled about nearby, happy to see their goal in sight, but also impatient to leave the mountains.
Chagraff grunted in reply. "At least the end is in sight."
Jayna ignored them both. "Gosh it's beautiful isn't it?" She concluded.
The Arcadian leadership fell silent, the breezes of the mountains blowing around them. They watched the patchwork of farms, people going about their daily lives.
"Oh look at those people." Jayna mused. "You would think that there wasn't a war going on. It’s as if the revolution did not affect them."
"To them it probably doesn't." Chagraff muttered in reply, almost to himself. "Does it matter for them if we win or the Imperials do?"
"We will make things better for them."
Chagraff frowned. "Did it matter whether the Bear or Lion rule? The kings or the Freelanders? The Other Men or humans? I don't think it did."
"It mattered if they suffered through those."
"If the war comes here, they'll always suffer. Regardless of who wins or who loses."
The warrior maid sighed. “I wish we weren’t bringing the war to them. But we are.”
“It cannot be helped." Roza called from the back. "We have to go down if we are to survive. If the revolution is to survive. If all the sacrifices everyone has made up to now is to mean anything.”
Jayna turned to her compatriot. “Do you think they’ll forgive us?”
“Some will, some won’t. We’ll do our best to be good.”
Jayna nodded to her, and also to Chagraff and Mera, and put her helmet on. "Then let's hope that this ends quickly for everyone. Then we can start building again."
As the Arcadian leaders turned back from the promontory, they suddenly came upon Galib standing in front of them cradling her helm. For once, the former bandit leader was smiling.
“I’m afraid commanders, that this is where I will take my leave.” The minotaur stated simply.
“You’re leaving us Galib?” Jayna asked.
“I am. We minotaurs belong in the mountains. It is our home, and it is our protection. Now that you have completed your trek across the Back Valley, it is time for my people to find a new land to settle in. Our old home is gone. Perhaps we could find a new one here."
The Arcadian leaders were startled. Even Mera looked up from his basking. But Jayna nodded. "I can leave a few of my scouts with you to help your quest."
The minotaur chuckled.
"We're bandits, and we always have extra cards under our sleeves. My family has already been searching for a new home ever since the Yazoo. My scouts have reported that Linangshan Valley a few miles North of here seems like a protected and fertile, and I think we shall try our luck there. My people have already begun packing to leave. In the hills and plains, we will get swallowed up like a stone in the flood. My people are barely clinging on to existence, and I will not risk them.”
"The Imperials are still pursuing." Chagraff cut in. "As are Paxton's Boys."
"We'll keep away from the main road. We can guard your rear, harass the Imperials as they approach and keep the Overmountain men busy. We've fought before in the hills and forests, and we can continue to do so once we understand the lay of this new land."
The warrior maid pantomimed a curtsy atop Stanton. "Very well. I bid you, Galib, now of the Liangshan Family, good luck on your ventures."
Chagraff bowed to the minotaur as well atop Lani. "I thank you for joining us through on our march. I don't think we could have made it through the Back Valley without the support of the Family."
Galib laughed again. "There is no need for expressions of gratitude. Your people helped mine escape from the encroachments of the Overmountain Boys and the Empire. Let us say instead that we had embarked upon a fruitful alliance."
"Very well then. Our alliance was fruitful and may it continue on."
"May it continue on."
The minotaur went to each of the Arcadian commanders to politely bow her head to them-even to Meratezatgh the dragon- before she turned to leave. As she moved down the trail however Galib idly touched the blue and gold axe on her back and then suddenly turned back to face Jayna.
"By the way, I can see now why my mother would be willing to die for your grandfather, Jayna of Arcadia. You would be willing to die for me. I appreciate that. And I will be willing to return the favor.”
"I certainly hope not!" The Arcadian leader was shocked. "I never asked you to die for me."
"No, I hope not either. But I will be willing to. Because you are special. You gave me something more important than money or land or power. You gave me hope in this world."
The minotaur knelt down and bowed again, deeply this time.
“I give my blessings to your revolution. May more of your people learn to be as kind as you.”
And then the daughter of Sarangay put her helm atop her head, turned and left.
The Arcadian leaders watched Galib disappear into the mountains.
Jayna wiped a few tears from her eyes before turning to Chagraff. "The world is burning and I was unable to put it out, but perhaps I can ensure that the new world can be better than the old."
Chagraff smiled.
And then they turned back to the task at hand.

Thanks! I need to develop her story a bit more, but she's showing up again soon!
I would like to see some insight on the inner part of the imperials. It kinda feels like fighting the wild
