Demo of a new track for my upcoming Sphat-90 best of CD "Checkpoint: Best Of '17-'21". This song uses elements of "Intervention" from my Sphatika album Finality, but it's largely a new song in its own right.
I wrote the song about a friend of a friend who had longtime alcohol addiction and recently passed away as a result. The song is what I imagined the mutual friend saying to them in the event of an intervention. The phrase "Drowned In Pleasure" is a play on the phrase "Drown Your Sorrows", ie, what you enjoy is actually making things worse.
You'll notice if you follow me that the vocal recording is much better on this than any previous recording. For years I somehow was only recording the left side of my microphone. I managed to finally fix the issue so it records in nice centred mono. Most of the tracks on my best of CD are being redone with new vocals like this so they'll sound much better.
Lyrics:
Verse 1:
Why's it always me who has to put things right
When you come running to me after every fight
Like a big snowball rolling out of control
Taking everybody down, it kills me in my soul
I remember when everything made sense
I never dreamed that one day you'd resort to violence
The spirit of the old days remains deep inside
Fossilized in amber, way beneath the ice
Chorus:
I've a deep connection to your secret heart
But we'll never know if we don't start
You have to change, yeah yeah
Ah, gone forever are those fateful days
Drowned in pleasure 'til its washed away
You have to change
Verse 2:
I know you had it hard, and things were pretty rough
But sometimes you gotta say enough is enough
Is it worth the pain you cause to those who care
Alienate them 'til they're no longer there
When life gives you lemons, some would make lemonade
You forego the mixer, you just take it straight
When that bottle's over, never have just one
Might as well be staring down the barrel of a gun
Repeat chorus
