Our Last Bonfire
Bring on branches, bring on kerosene.
Bring a match, and bring your songs.
Come and burn your school books,
Come and burn your cares away.
Singe the shadows all night long.
In this party without end or pause,
We intoxicate our minds.
But I ruminate that
We forget where we all stand,
Spurn the danger that we find.
Drought's been harsh this lazy summer;
Arid field and withered tree
Lay too close around us.
Autumn stands in waiting now;
In it's promise I can see:
The wind, the spark,
The smoke, the flame,
The light, the dark,
The guilt, the shame.
This is our last bonfire,
Before the long, hard school year.
I'm sorry, friends;
This isn't how it's supposed to be.
We dared to touch the Sun;
It seems, though, that we've burnt our wings
But we'll give the stars a show tonight...
It's our last bonfire,
A little more than we intended.
In the greater scheme of things,
We're one bright flash.
Could summer maybe be forever?
Are we out of chances now?
Pray for rain, and taste the ash.

I do enjoy a nice, upbeat frolic through a garden of words. I think I need to change my brand of fertilizer.

This gives me a lot of competing mental images at the same time. Poetry doesn't usually spark much in me (no pun intended in this case), but this is a major exception to that. Very well done.
Thank you. This was sort of an experiment in metaphor, which has been a bit of a weak point in stuff I've written previously.
