A sunrise.
I've always wanted to see one myself but never got around to doing it. I'm only doing it now because It might be my last chance to do so. It was on my bucket list, alongside making a song that would last an eternity. That will have to be put on hold for now.
Now, don't get me wrong. What I'm about to do isn't change the world, let alone a city. I just have to give someone some payback for all the shit they've put me through. Several people correlate with my main target that could disrupt my plans, but we'll see what the future holds.
Are you wondering about me then? Well, it's %#$#, and I'm &*$%$ but ^*&*&^*&**(*) (@!@#$#%$^#%$ wil$## %#@$323 ouble.#@#4...
… … . . .
... what? What am I … ? All… I see there is darkness. What is this? Am I-
I hear a loud thud; everything comes at me all at once. My vision, my hearing, even my train of thought and feeling. Am I moving? I'm in something that's driving me?! Where-... I take a deep and not-so-smooth breath as I try to calm myself. I need to calm down.
So far, I'm in a wooden box that's being moved somehow. By a creature of sorts? What do I see? I see light. Rays of light are seeping through the wooden planks that have me inside here. I… I? Who am I? How do I look?
Who is me, and what is... myself?!
WHAT?! WHAT IS GOING ON?! I… I can't move my hands; they're restrained by something rugged and sturdy. Where-?
The moving box stops in its tracks, again breaking me of these panicked thoughts I'm having. I can hear a conversation outside and can fully understand them. My vision is blurry, but my ears are working- functioning. They are performing well, so I'll rely on those.
"Who the hell lives out here?! This place is too dead for even a speck of grass." A masculine voice is saying,… complaining, he is complaining.
"Is that a complaint? You can take it up to our master if you wish." Another masculine voice, a more stern voice, says in response.
Worried, the other voice says, "Ever the stoic with you. I just said that aloud because it's true. There is nothing out here."
"Hush. Our job is to deliver the enslaved person here. We won't be here for long." enslaved person? "Now come here and help me move him."
I'm a he? Male? Man? That soothes me, but only briefly. I hear something move, something hard- metallic. I hear something metallic disengage, and a door opens, revealing two figures and blinding light. I still can't see well, the next few moments flying at an instant. They grab me by my arms, drag me to my feet; I stand and feel all of it. They say things that try to get me to move more- motivate me. They're trying to boost my movements, so they aren't dragging me the whole way. I blink some to adjust to the light, and the sunlight is caused by that glowing orb- The sun! Ah, that's bright.
The next thing I know, I'm inside standing. My form is barely stable, so it surprises me when I'm pushed from my backside and fall flat. I hear the chains hit the ground before I do. I'm bound with my arms facing the front side, at least.
"Is he…? He hasn't been damaged on the way here, has he?" This question comes from someone different, someone with a raspy and very male voice.
"Is that a problem?" says the stern one. It sounded more like he was going to do- threat. It sounded more like a threat than a question.
"No." The other replies. "It would just take time to get started properly. That falls under my responsibility now."
"Glad you understand, sir." Sir?
After the exchange, I'm turned over, looking down at my paws… they're black from there to the middle of my forearm. A metal key is inserted into a hole, and my metal restraints are now off. I noticed the one who did it as well. He has an extended face with rounded ears poking out of a hat and has the same- Canine! He's a canine! A spotted hyena is wearing a helmet and hardened leather armor around his waist. The same goes for the other man. They are both spotted hyenas.
"Thank you for the delivery." A taller figure comes within my field of viewing and is shown to be much taller than the other two and has a different body type- anatomy, than the other two. "Give the lord my gratitude and this message. 'Expect him ready in… 4 months.'"
As he finishes, one of the armored hyenas gives him a rolled piece of paper with two wooden handles. That's called a 'scroll.' The pair lightly bow and make their leave through a… door made from drapes. I'm left alone with the taller figure with beige… fur. He has a light, thin coat, and his face- maw is less jutted out and broader. He also has a mane around his head with a contrasting darker color.
Lion, he's a lion. I think he's older due to his voice. He comes up to me and picks me up by my bicep with one arm, forcing me to sit on a wooden chair. He now takes hold of my face and observes it. I can now see his face as well. A few scars here and there.
"You look like shit," he says, letting go of my face. "Not sure how you got here, and I don't care. I'm just getting paid to whip you into shape." he walks over to a… fireplace, lighting it. "I must say, you look pathetic-"
"Sssir… ?" I speak for the first time. I finally hear myself, and it's weak. The lion turns to regard me, so I continue. "I…" just get it out. "Do you… have a mirror?" He doesn't answer, just looks at me. I… elaborate. "Sir, I need a mirror or something that has a reflective surface, please!" I'm begging at this point. "I'm gonna lose my mind unless you grant this one request, I beg you!"
He stands in place, confused, then slowly walks off into a corner. I… I'm not okay. My mind is not functioning as it should, I don't recall anything, and I'm panicking for a reason I cannot fully comprehend!
A small shard, the size of my paw, is placed in front of my view. "There," the older feline sits across from me. "That is all I have."
I take it, look at it, bring it farther away to see better…, and there I am.
Me. I… don't know what I was expecting. I'm a canine by the shape of my muzzle, but there are some striking details about me. First off, My fur has both black and gray colors, with my face mostly being gay with small black triangles underneath my eyes. I use my free paw to feel the texture of the fur around my face and let it glide across the top of my head. There seems to be a black stripe that splits in two, leaving a gray valley. That seems to go on toward the back of my spine. The most striking feature is my eyes. The iris is red, almost crimson, while behind that is more yellow than white. The pupils are black. My ears are gray, but the inside is all black. I also take note of my entire body. It's mainly gray, save the two dividing black stripes on my back. My paws, hind legs, and tail are black to a certain point, while my tail is shaded completely. One last cliff note is my… lack of clothing. I'm wearing nothing but a loincloth covering my… lower parts and behind, and I have this metal collar around my neck. However, it became attached; it's tight.
As I finally see what I look like, I instantly calm down. As a result, I become fully aware of my surroundings. I'm inside a rectangular building made from various stones with a roof made from long tree branches and a large piece of cloth acting as a covering. It has some things lying about; In one corner is what appears to be a bed made from hay. Across from that is an old chest that looks worn out. A table and chair made for eating with a fireplace accompanied by a lit fire are on my side. On the right side is a rack with some weaponry placed methodically. If I'm honest, the stand of metal objects looks to be the only organized spot in this place.
I put the small mirror taking everything in, still in my seat. "Thank you for the mirror," I say. "I… must apologize for my behavior. I didn't know what I looked like, which had me terrified." The lion sits across from me on his side of the table. "You said something about training?" I look at him, and I need him to hear me. "I am very lost at the moment. So it would help greatly if you answered a couple of questions." I don't give him a chance to speak and berate him, although I keep my voice timid and speak clearly. "Who am I? What's the name of the land I walk on, and what is this building to you?" I grasp my collar. "If any of those questions have anything to do with this, don't hesitate to mention them."
Everything takes him by surprise. He takes a breath, leans into his chair, and speaks without restraint. "The land you walk on, Is called 'Mataa.' It is a large country with dry air. It has deserts, mountains, and a few lakes in the middle. To the north is a neighboring country called 'Amuresca,' land of the dogs, as they say." He re-adjusts the seating and continues. "A fun fact about this place is that its economy is purely fueled by slave labor. It's called 'Indebted servitude.' If you owe a large sum of coin to someone mighty, you can forge a contract with those people to work to pay off that debt. They're brand with an iron ring fitted around the neck. The people in power are called clans. Usually, hyenas run them, but anyone rich and powerful can make these."
"...oh" is all I can muster in response.
He continues. "Now, there are many ways to pay off the debt, but it depends on where they place you. The most common place is working on a plantation, working on the crops, and doing menial labor. You can work as a servant to the clan in their manor or as a whore, selling your body for the clan that owns the establishment. The other option is a bit niche, but one that is still in use today." He grows a grin. "Becoming a Gladiator." his voice becomes more jovial as if he was excited about coming to this part. "Their line of work entails fighting others in a Coliseum for sport and entertainment. If you have the coin, you can pay the manager to fight a combatant of theirs. Back in the day, you'd pay to have a battle to the death, but now it's just to have a thrill. Sometimes different clans will have disputes, and if one of them wishes it, they could settle matters in the ring using servants from their respective herds. Now those are where blood is shed the most."
Before adding more, he leans on the chair with an arm. "As for me, I am a… tutor, of sorts. My job is to turn weaklings like you into fine warriors, preparing them for the unforgiving battlefield," he says with much pride in his voice, despite how raspy it is. "Of course, the owner does have the option to throw their servants in the ring, but those usually don't last long. But to make a profit, you'll need capable fighters. Do you agree? It just makes sense."
Piecing everything together, I can surmise my current situation is dire. Am I supposed to be a… gladiator? And this man in front of me is supposedly my teacher. If all of this is my doing, then what the hell happened?
"Oh yes, one more thing." He continues once more. "This small hut is my house. I live here. As for who you are," he holds up that scroll I saw earlier. "You can find out for yourself." He extends his arm to me, that same scroll in paw, and I take it. "It's common knowledge that those living in the lower caste don't know how to read, but I'm not one to assume. Besides, I imagine that the same population would at least know how to read their name. It's something I would prioritize."
I'm hesitant, but I take the scroll and have the wooden handles part ways, revealing what I need to know. It says… it takes me a second to realize I'm holding it sideways. I turn it clockwise, where I start to make out the letters.
Tanvir… "My name… Is Tanvir," speaking it out loud takes so much weight off my shoulder. It also states my age is 17, and I'm a canine of an undetermined species. Okay, that's good. I've read enough and roll the scroll back up.
"There, are you satisfied now?" The lion interrupts my train of thought. "Because that's all the favors you're getting out of me!" He stands and swipes the- MY contract from my paws. "I only humored you solely for my own sake… are you listening!?" he says as he grabs my chin and forces my view to face him. "I asked a question, now can you answer!?" I nod. In reaction, he releases my jaw. "Good, because now, your training starts. I only humored you because I value a strong start to a long-term goal. My job is to prepare you for the ring. That means you must do as I say. Am I clear?" I nod again. "ANSWER ME! With your words." he gives the order with a growl behind it.
"Yes."
"It's 'Yes sir!'" he retorts.
"Yes, Sir!" I'm tense and give him the correct response.
"And stand up straight!" I do so as commanded.
"Good, good." he walks towards the entrance. "Follow me; I have to give you the tour of your grounds. Both of them being training and sleeping grounds."
"Uh… sir?" he stops mid-track, turning to me. "If I may, there is something you should know about me-"
"I don't care. We've wasted enough time already-"
"Am I your pupil?" I ask, catching him off guard. "If so, the teacher should be made aware of anything regarding the student." All he does is stare at me. I guess he's waiting, Humoring me one last time. "I… don't know who I am." He doesn't say anything in response, so I continue. "As in, I don't remember anything. I can't recall much- Memories! I've lost my memories, Sir."
"... is this some joke?" is all he says.
"Sir, I'm trying to explain my behavior from earlier. My mind was blank, and I was terrified until I saw my mirror image and learned of my name. So I thank you for dealing with my selfish needs." I walk up until I'm in front of the stark feline, only a foot apart from each other. "I'll do as you say and meet whatever your expectations are."
"... I like the sound of that." He extends his arms and grasps my shoulders. "We'll make a fine warrior out of you." taking his paws off and continuing outside through those drapes.
I follow him outside and… If I'm being honest, I have no idea what is going on, but for now, I'll have to do as I'm told. It's the only thing I can do at the moment. I owe money, but for who, and why? It's like I'm on the road, with it leading somewhere, but there is nothing behind me. If I could see what was there, I could move, but I can't. I have to force myself to move; otherwise, I won't get anywhere. From what I can tell, this road will be greatly rocky.
And so I rise from the grave to bring this.
I've been busy IRL, and now I feel like explaining myself.
I've redone the whole of the story I had previously. I've thought of the main character in a different light, and in turn, changed the story around him. I'm slowly working on this, but I'm very happy for how this is coming out.

I've never seen a furry character based on mightyena before! looks really cool!
Thanks! I’m sure I’m not the first to do so, but I appreciate the compliment.
Alright! I'm really digging this so far! I really love the story you've written, a blank slate start can be rather contentious amongst many writers and readers but it seems to be doing alright so far! I am a huge fan of Rukis' settings, and the fact that you're exploring themes I like to see certainly makes me interested to read more! Good job so far please do keep it up! (I discovered your work via an art image of this character I believe and it really drew me in!)
