This art is from our Faux Pas 2009 calendar, reprising the story where Jon and Cindy are a bit confused about "date night" and the human rituals Randy and Penny both grew up with.

I know that early on, they used lower resolutions to save on file size for their website. Data restrictions and such. I believe a lot of their philosophy on these things was influenced from back then.
I do share a similar sentiment to you, however; once the current comic expires into the archive, the resolution downgrades and it becomes far less pretty. They used to get books printed with the comic strips, which is part of that. I have all(?) 5. But since that's not the case anymore, I do wish they would change their archive to the 'full' resolution for all of the comics.
Of course, website tweaks are... not friendly to do. Especially when working with such an aged product. Anyways, just consider them ancient internet dwellers and enjoy the artwork the best you can. ;3

So wait... was the strip inside the image once bigger and legible?
Oh, the comic strip within it? Yeah, that can be viewed over at their comic page. Definitely worth reading: http://www.ozfoxes.net/cgi/pl-fp2.cgi?1
I plan to read the entire thing before I die. I have PLENTY of time.
It goes quick, especially in the weekly format. Want a real challenge? Watch all of One Piece without skipping around outside of OP/ED/Recap. :P
The Ozfoxes will probably correct me if I’m wrong, but I think the main reason the archived strips are low resolution is due to the sheer quantity. (Currently over 2400 individual strips! 😱)
Thankfully, bandwidth caps are much less of a thing than they used to be. Unless the comic is hosted from a private server with low total bandwidth, I don't think there would be an issue at this point. But it's true that not all hosting plans are created equal, so, I'm certainly not going to claim to know all the details. ;)
