The pencil's actually a myth. There is no common pencil with the right diameter to be used to rewind a cassette tape. A BIC pen is the best implement, even just the cap (we actually kept a BIC pen cap in the car when I was a child, just in case we needed to respool a cassette).

I just don't get why cassette tapes have somehow become popular again. They were pretty awful and the only tapes I have seen these days are not meant for music due to the amount of dropouts and lower fidelity. What they cost nowadays used to get you chrome and metal tapes, which were far superior than the Maxell UR tapes they sell now. Bleah...
I suppose that 8-tracks are next, followed by wire recorders and ultimately Edison cylinders. 😂
