A wonderfully cute pic from
pregoo and introducing Elaine's husband Chris! Not the tallest fennec around, but she's also a little tall, so there's that, too!

I loved the idea of following Elaine's first forays into the world of motherhood. This is mostly because I can do timeskips without having to consider the future of my other tiggies - since we already are witnessing it. Of course, I realize this will mirror some of my other tiggies' experiences with their first litters, so we'll need to hop to a few more litters in the horizon, right? Hehe, I'm rambling and I have lots of writing to catch up on. Feel free to ask stuff about 'em!
---
The house was mostly asleep with the moon high in the night sky. From time to time, soft mewls and yips could be heard from the many bedrooms within the crowded home. Each little cub and kit slept well into the evening hours, some caught up in dreams that carried them along for the night. The youngest ones would wake up in a few hours for their overnight feeding, but at the moment, just about all of the children were asleep.
Just about.
In her bedroom, little Evelyn stirred. Something about the night just made her unable to get to sleep right. The tigerfox flicked her ears and climbed out of bed quietly so as not to wake her litter-siblings. The fox and tiger siblings looked fast asleep, but Eve was used to that. Thankfully they weren’t snoring like in some dry Summer nights, but it did not matter, since she couldn’t get to sleep anyways. Perhaps some milk would help her get to counting sheep correctly, she supposed, and so the young tigerfox walked down the hallway toward the kitchen.
She heard the soft sleeping sounds of her younger siblings, each room to her left filled with cribs of multiple litters that followed her own. To think, she and her three siblings were the only children in the house for a year or so before the next batch came...then the next...and the next. She was not the only hybrid child, too, but she felt she had a responsibility to the younger kits, to represent the hybrids as the eldest sibling. The first one ever - well, from her parents at least. Maybe she was just bothered by school or her siblings or some such, but then again general anxiety is hard to figure out. All she knew definitively was that she could not sleep, and milk seemed like a good idea.
She heard a distant cough from one of the larger living rooms near the kitchen, and Evelyn slowed her steps, wondering who would be awake at that dastardly late hour of midnight. Her pensive steps left no sound behind, and her mind considered the possibility of an evening stranger or troll wandering the grounds. Her father had a tendency to tell stories of the mystical nature, but she never really believed them. She liked hearing her siblings gasp at each surprise in his stories - oh no the frog was a wizard all along - but she loved most hearing about the day-to-day lives of the Little Witches. They were smaller catfoxes who played tricks on the bullies of the night, trolls included. Sure, she was the one who asked him to tell stories of the Little Witches, first, but Daddy's stories always felt more real than she expected.
In her internal sojourn, the young tigerfox did not notice that she had walked passed the living room doorway. Her subconscious was thinking of milk, and her conscious was concerning trolls and what trick to pull on them for breaking into her house. By the time she realized she had reduced her sneaking stance too far, she heard a soft call from the room - warm and equally concerned.
"Evelyn, is that you?"
Could the trolls be playing a trick on her? No, nobody could mimic Mom's voice like that.
Elaine sat on a loveseat within the living room, a large book placed at her side. Her hair had been tied up behind her, and she wore a long blue night-robe. Her belly pressed the gown out against her lap, and her paws lightly patted at its side to calm some active kits within. The eldest daughter peeked around the doorway and squeaked softly.
"Mom?"
"Yes, Evelyn. You should be sleeping. Is something the matter?" Trolls would have never asked her how she was, and so Even's stresses were dissolved into gentle purrs.
"No...I just can't sleep,"
"Really? That makes a few of us," she gently patted her middle. "Your next brothers and sisters are being particular today. Mom's dessert may have been too sweet to calm them down,"
"What about milk? I was going to try milk myself,"
"That's a good choice. Milk would calm me down when I was younger, Nana says, so it seems we're all alike,"
"Aside from my ears, my tail, my fur, my-"
"Little Biscuit, you may look different, but you are still the daughter of your mother. You will definitely share some semblance on the inside..."
"And Daddy?"
"Oh of course him, too. I've seen how you smile when Story Time is happening. Did you know he thought of writing a book series once?"
"He did?!" she climbed onto the loveseat, snuggled up against her mother as she opened the large book - actually an album.
"Yes yes. He had a way with words, but he wasn't exactly great at planning. When we first bought this place, I had to do most of the negotiating...look here..."
She stopped at a photo, a large image of what Evelyn believed to be the front of their home, but brighter and somehow concernedly sterile. She instinctively looked over toward where the front door was, but returned back to the photo to see the real focus of the picture
"You see this? This is us right when we got the house. We were so enthusiastic about starting the home together and having a family. We also had dreams that were a little more lofty, your father included. His job was not the greatest, but he just got a promotion and was on cloud nine. I had to do a lot of back and forth discussions with the realtor - they show and sell us the house - and Dad always wanted to take whatever offer was in front of him. I think he was just so happy we were about to be together. Even here, look at that smile!"
Evelyn leaned into the book and saw her father, short as always and pressed lightly against his mate's side. A For Sale sign was held proudly in his arm, marked off as sold. His shirt was buttoned-down but partially untucked, a little hint of the activities that lead to the photo. For the Fennec fox, this was a whirlwind of an experience, and his eldest daughter could only giggle at the sight.
"He is really happy!"
"Yeah, and so was I! I was just as eager, too. I mean, we had a lot of work to do, including welcome our first little ones..."
"You mean-"
"Yep! You're in the picture, too,"
Elaine pointed at one of the four little blobs of grey in the ultrasound photo which her younger self held.
"I don't know if you smiled exactly, but I think you were all busy growing big and strong instead," the tigress giggled, and her hybrid daughter hugged her mother appreciatively. "I will admit, it was not the cakewalk those smiles make it seem, but getting this place and preparing for you and all your brothers and sisters was an experience I won't want to take back. Even if we had to stop a few of some dreams to do it,"
Evelyn gently held her chin and pondered a second before yipping quickly, "But...Daddy still has time to write, doesn't he? I mean, I can help with the babies if he can do...some writing..." she slowed down and kicked her feetpaws, now a bit unsure of herself. Her mother kissed her cheek.
"Hun, if you want to help me with the little ones, you are doing so much for us both. I'm sure if you talk to Daddy, he would love to hear how much you love his stories and want to help him. Maybe you can collaborate on a story together,"
"REALLY?!"
"Shh...the babies are almost awake for their morning feeding...best not wake them up until they're up, or else they'll get crabby,"
"Oh...sorry, Mom," her ears lowered until Elaine kissed her head.
"No no, it's okay. I forgive you. I've been talking too much anyways, hehe...hey, the feeding is in a short while...do you mind helping me get ready for the feeding before you get back to bed?"
Her eyes widened and she squeaked, "Oh yes, Mommy!"
Elaine placed the book beside her as Evelyn leaped from the loveseat and toward the kitchen.
"She's definitely more like me than Chris, though," she giggled to herself and waddled toward the kitchen with her daughter already eager to help.
