Beatrice had always been a fan of airships. And today, she was going to steal one.
The kobold grinned as she snuck into the zeppelin hangar, giggling gleefully to herself. She had done her research: nobody would be at the hangar during this time of the day, this brief period between the ending first guild guard’s shift, and the beginning of the second guild guard’s shift. Looks like nobody wanted to be here at 4 in the morning—and really, who could blame them? Regardless, it gave Beatrice the perfect opening to conduct her plan.
She snuck her way to the biggest of the guild’s airships: The Cradona, which was said to be able to house a couple hundred people. When she reached the door of the craft, the kobold took out her supplies, and began to get to work unlocking it.
As she did so, she let her mind drift a bit. She had always been a master tinkerer, ever since she was young—which was especially useful in this era of steam, machines, and gears. Upon moving to this great city of London, she met the Inventor’s Guild. At first, she sought to join them, and was eager to be among those who thought similarly to herself. But the more she got to know them, the more she realized that the inventors were nothing more than rich capitalists who used their inventions to help keep the city’s rich wealthy, and keep the poor downtrodden. And she couldn’t stand for such an injustice, so she set out on her own.
/Click!/ The door of the zeppelin opened wide, and Beatrice grinned. That was the easy part out of the way. Now for the rest.
She made her way inside the aircraft, making sure to close and lock the door behind her. Making her way though the zeppelin, she found herself surrounded by beautiful passenger decks, extravagant dining halls with storerooms of supplies, and plenty of beds. Good.
Finally, she reached the front of the airship, where the pilot’s bay was. The place was beautiful, with spotless flooring, and it made Beatrice grin. At the bay were clearly labeled buttons, levers, and a big wheel.
She put her hands on the wheel and pressed one of the buttons. Immediately the zeppelin came to life: the engines roared and the propellers spun. Beatrice pushed one of the levers, and the machine began to slowly rise up, out of the open ceiling of the Inventor’s Guild’s cargo bay.
She rose up higher and higher, squealing with delight as the machine went past the bay, into the sky, and soon, it was in the clouds. Using the wheel now, she began to spin it, and navigate her way to her intended destination.
Finally, she reached it. It was an open field, filled with London’s homeless population, who she had told to come to this location. Her friend and mentor Gregory, a bear, was also there. Beatrice pulled the lever, and started to bring the zeppelin down.
The people below stood back as she landed. Wind rushed from the propellers of the machine as she came closer and closer to the grass until, finally, the kobold hit the ground, and turned off the machine.
The people waited in quiet anticipation for Beatrice to come out. She did not disappoint, and after unlocking the door, she opened the door to the zeppelin with a big smile.
“There’s enough food and water for all of you!” she said triumphantly. “And after that, we can go wherever we want!”
There was a pause from the crowd as they took in this information. Then, the crowd began to cheer. “Come on in!” the kobold said, waving people forward. They all boarded the zeppelin, with Gregory coming inside last.
After preparing some of the food from the kitchen, the crowd filled up the dining hall of the aircraft, and had a massive feast. Gregory and Beatrice sat at a table together, just the two of them.
“You know that the Inventor’s Guild is going to be extremely angry about this?” Gregory asked. “Once they find out it was you, you’ll probably be a wanted criminal.”
“Of course I know that,” the kobold said, shrugging.
“And you know that the Inventor’s Guild is going to try and take it back, right?”
“They can try.”
The bear smiled. “You’re tough, kid,” he said. “But one last thing.”
“What is it?”
“You know I’m proud of you, don’t you?”
Beatrice smiled.
“Of course I do.”
