[Commission] Call of the Forest Shrine ⛩️🌲 (w/story)
A commission for JerryandTerry123 of their character transforming into a Furret in the Ilex Forest, accompanied by their Vaporeon companion. This was such a fun, wholesome commission. <3
A deep orange sun slowly sank toward the canopy of the Ilex Forest, casting long shadows that crept across the carpet of fallen leaves. As the trees swayed in a cool breeze, the pleasant scent of pine mingled with the earthy smell of damp moss. Wild Hoothoot, Rattatta, and Sentret called to each other through the trunks and branches, their voices blending into the endless chirrs and drones of bug Pokémon.
The usual sounds of the forest were interrupted by two sets of crunching footsteps. Jerry breathed in deeply, enjoying the pleasant evening. His long grey tail swished back and forth behind him, flicking occasionally to knock stray leaves and apricots off the path. Vaporeon, his companion, kept watch beside him, ears flicking at every noise.
Jerry craned his neck, watching as the sky’s colors slowly faded into deep blues and the first faint stars began to twinkle into existence. He turned to Vaporeon, who chirped something he couldn’t understand. “So, what do you think? Should we find a place to camp or try to make it to Azalea Town?”
“Va-por.” Vaporeon answered.
Jerry smiled. While he couldn’t understand the words, he could at least grasp the sentiment. “Yeah, I’m pretty beat too. Why don’t you find us a good spot?”
“Por!” Vaporeon bounded ahead, scouting while Jerry followed. However, before they’d gone far, Vaporeon stopped to stare deep into the tree line.
Jerry slowed, following Vaporeon’s line of sight. “What is it?”
“…Vap?”
Something was sparkling just off the path: a trail of faintly glowing blue orbs that bobbed and danced in the shadows. Just beyond them, he caught sight of a bright red roof and heard the faint tinkling of chimes.
“A forest shrine,” Jerry breathed. “You think it’s—hey, come back!”
Jerry scrambled to follow Vaporeon through the thicket as branches and thorns grasped at his clothes. He stumbled into the clearing, where the glowing magic he’d only been able to catch a glimpse of from the path danced merrily all around them. Ribbons of glittering magic wound between the leaves and embellished the sky above them with a dazzling array of twinkling lights. It tickled across his skin, making the fur on his tail stand up and his teeth buzz. His own shapeshifting magic responded, pulsing gently just below his skin. It was hard to rein in.
Vaporeon bit on his sleeve and tugged and Jerry gasped, suddenly remembering to breathe. “This is beautiful.”
“Vaporeon! Vapor, re.” Vaporeon hopped from one foot to another excitedly.
Jerry eyed the water Pokémon, unsure. “Is this where you want to camp?”
Vaporeon shook their head before gently biting his hand, holding their paw up to his fingers with a pointed look.
“Oh!” Jerry said. “You really think I should?”
Vaporeon nodded decisively. “Vaporeon.”
Jerry smiled, running through the options in his head. If they were going for a night run then whatever he chose had to be fast, able to see well in the dark, and agile. Maybe –
A colony of Sentret trilled happily nearby, and it was decided. He turned to Vaporeon with a grin. “Race you through the forest!”
Vaporeon chirped, overjoyed, and headbutted him playfully before bounding away. Jerry followed, mood and energy uplifted by the thrill of transformation. His magic responded quickly, bolstered by that of the nearby shrine. It sparked in his chest near his heart, filling him up to bursting before trickling down his limbs. The sensation was simultaneously warm, cool, ticklish, and prickly, the sheer variety of sensations nearly indescribable in their complexity. He leapt forward, magic surging as a cascade of changes occurred between one step and the next.
Fur pushed up out of his skin, starting at his neck and running down his arms and legs in waves. It ran down his back and limbs, engulfing his hands and feet, trailing around the back of his ears and jaw while thicker, longer fur pushed out around his neck in a silky soft, plush mane. Underneath the new fur, the skin of his neck thickened, toughening up to resist bites during play or skirmishes. His tail twitched as the fur coating it grew longer, shifting from solid grey to a fluffy mountain of striped cream and brown.
At the same time, his hands and feet began to shift. Fingers and toes twitched as the bones slid beneath the skin, reconfiguring his human digits for burrowing and running on all fours. The bed of his fingernails ached briefly before each changed shape before his eyes. They turned thicker and longer, pushing out from his fingertips into sharp, translucent white claws. The fingers themselves pulled back in towards his hands, aching in a good way as the bones shortened and his arms adapted to quadrupedal locomotion. His forearms shortened, muscles sliding under his skin as bones became pliable.
His elbows and shoulder blades crackled as they changed orientation, forcing his arms in front of him in a quadrupedal stance. He stretched them out as he fell forward to catch his fall as tickling flutter ran across the palms. He curled his clawed fingers as the skin of his palm thickened, flushed pink, and pushed out into calloused plush paw pads that absorbed the shock as he landed with his hands on the ground.
Jerry pushed off with both hands and feet, bounding somewhat awkwardly into the next leap on legs that were still too long. His toes compressed inside his shoes as his feet left the ground, tarsals and metatarsals expanding to push his toes and heel tight against the constraining fabric. His toenails thickened and sharpened as they slid down and forward, becoming part of the last digit of his toes instead of simply attached at the skin. They scratched and scraped at the inside of his shoe, pressing painfully back against his feet. His shoes tightened around his feet, which ached immensely before his heel finally slipped out the back and his toes burst out of the cloth at the front with a massive RRRIIIIP! Pieces of cloth and rubber fell to the ground as soft pads grew from his toes and ball of his foot, tickling in a way that made him curl his toes.
As his body shifted into a shape his clothes were never designed to fit, his jeans, shirt, and jacket constricted around his torso and hips. The fabric pulled and tugged, stretching tight across his back but hanging loose across his belly and chest as his arms grew closer in front and his ribcage deepened. The apparel strained, cloth growing thin enough to see through, before it ripped spectacularly at the seams.
Bits of cloth fell in shreds from his body, held in place around his shoulders and waist only by the sturdy straps of his backpack and thick leather belt. The bag's straps soon followed his clothes to destruction, each strap pulled uncomfortably tight before it eventually gave and snapped forcefully apart. Jerry glanced at his backpack as it fell, making a quick mental note to return for it later.
While the fabric of his shirt, jacket, and jeans gave way quickly, however, his belt was less forgiving. It pulled at down on the top of his hips as his pelvis shifted on its axis and his legs reconfigured. The heavy leather pulled tight, biting into his skin of his hips. It creaked and groaned as it strained against the forced movement, but finally buckled and failed where one of the holes met the metal clasp. It gave way abruptly with a mighty rip, scattering his empty Pokéballs across the forest floor.
He felt a tug from the base of his neck to the tip of his tail, like his spine had been pulled taught. It stretched as new vertebrae filled in, bones growing longer and more flexible. The sensation of his head pushing out from his body as his neck lengthened was both dizzying and exhilarating. He only felt off-kilter for a split second, however, before he steadied himself with his long, fluffy tail. His skull tightened as its plates slid into a flatter shape. A flicker of new instinct sparked to life and he surrendered to it, instinctively adjusting his tail’s position to maintain balance as his paws landed the second step.
Jerry’s ears popped, crackling as the inner bones shifted and rearranged. Vaporeon was still calling out ahead of him, excitedly urging him to go faster: “Va-por, -por-eon -on!” He felt like he could almost catch the meaning, words filtering in and out of understanding. (“Come on slowpoke, you’ll miss all the fun!”)
He pushed off again into a third leap, each bound easier as he slid into his new form like he’d been born to it. His glasses wobbled as his face pushed out into a blunt snout, nose turning a peachy color as he felt it become cold and wet. His silky coat began to cover his face, making his scalp itch as his human hair changed to soft fur. The fur run down the bridge of his nose, curling around his whiskers, before painting two stripes on each cheek. His vision blurred then sharpened, eyes tingling as their inner workings changed, showing the trees and bushes around him almost as clear and bright in the gloam as they would be at midday. Unseen to him, his irises expanded, darkening from brown to black as the white sclera receded behind his eyelids.
As Jerry’s paws landed, the last of the changes took place quickly. A dull ache started in his gums as his teeth shifted, growing pointed, and his tongue felt compressed as it flattened and became rougher. His ears tingled as they slid up the sides of his head, rounding out into delicate pink curved shells rimmed with short velvety fur. Fur ran across the rest of his body, filling in the last few patches of bare skin and solidifying into a pattern of thick brown bars on a light creamy backdrop. Brown patterning encased his hands and ran across his head, all the way up to the lighter tip of his ears and like a hood down across his brow and along his cheekbones. He took a moment to shake out his new fur like a wet Poochyena, reveling in the litheness and strength of his new Furret shape.
Vaporeon turned and grinned, canines gleaming in an approval in the rising moonlight. “Well, I’d have chosen something a little wetter,” the Pokémon joked, “But I guess that’s a good pick for a forest run.”
Jerry barked out a chittering laugh. “You always say that when I don’t choose Vaporeon.” He sniffed the air, sneezing at the sharp ozone-like spark of magic, and his ears twitched as he caught the excited calls of other Pokémon in the distance. The night’s magic was contagious, driving everyone to celebration as brilliant swirls of luminescent blue twirled through the branches. “Now come on, bet you can’t catch me!”
Their laughter rang through the trees as they darted among the fairy lights, lithe forms wreathed in an azure glow. As the last of the sun’s rays finally faded the shrine’s bells rang out again, welcoming the rising moon.
It was going to be an absolutely magical night.
