“An interesting discovery was made recently that I felt obligated to report due to the bizarre situation revolving around it.”
“To get into some details of the area to the north of my cave - the “science paradise” of the Land of Might - is a land of creativity and technology on a world that otherwise disdains technology because of the presence of gods and access to magic. Might’s territory lies on something of a neutral ground where there are spirits and magical creatures, but no pantheon watches over the region to enforce their technophobic ways in favor of utility magic.”
“Might’s capital lies in a long-dormant volcanic caldera, a pact at the nation’s forging was made with local earth and nature spirits to keep the volcano dead and let the mortals there reap the rich steam energy - as long as they don’t let their advancement completely wipe out the presence of nature there (As an aside - this has resulted in a beautiful and homey small-town-in-a-forest feel even though the city is rather large and weaved with steam piping).
“In the center of Might’s capital city is a massive steel building known by the locals - most certainly ironically - as “The Cathedral”, this structure had existed since long before anyone had settled and most likely when the volcano was still active in the region because it’s sunk into the ground for several miles, at points even touching the lava veins in the volcano’s depths.. Almost nobody knows where it came from, though my recent experiences with going to other worlds has me certain but confused that the Cathedral may actually be a dormant spaceship.”
“Now… What all this is leading up to was the recent discovery of a new chamber deep down in the ship, and inside of it - this creature, a Protogen.”
“After the researchers popped open the chamber a stray step reactivated the room and with it their new friend woke up in a blur of confusion. After scrambling for some time to figure out its nature, the creature picked up our languages at a high pace and started to talk and introduce herself.”
“Her “Designation” was… well, unimportant, but the name she was given after being asked for a better one was Terra. I’ll be the first to admit that Protogen are extremely unfamiliar to me, it was only recently I started to go to other worlds and learn of the greater scope of things, and I’ve yet to encounter one otherwise.”
“After getting herself going up enough, she observed changes to her body - namely her electrical output seemed to have altered itself in odd and unpredictable ways such that she no longer needed traditional power like the kind the steam and geothermal energy that power's Might's electronics, but instead seemed to be able to draw the ambient magic from the air.”
“It’s often been observed that Sedd changes creatures to fit itself if it has to. This is similar to the processes that involve Successors to godhoods. Could it be that being on the planet for so long, even in stasis, had fundamentally changed her biology and how she functions into a creature that blended magic and technology together? Perhaps for the better, as the pantheons may tolerate her presence in this world better if she’s equally magic and science.”
“However… Her presence opens up SO many more questions about just what the Cathedral is. Normally to get here by technological means, one has to know the name of Vakkert Sedd and be explicitly invited to the planet, otherwise spaceships can’t perceive the planet’s existence and just phase through it like it’s in a different dimension, for an entire spaceship of that scale to make it to the planet would have been incomprehensible - and such a ship would probably have been struck from the sky by the gods which would in itself explain how it ended up landing in a volcano of all places. Another thing is that this planet is a cradle of creation and very few worlds are older; something related to time breaking may have been involved in the ship’s appearance, as I’m not sure if Protogen as a species are older than Might (which is roughly a thousand years old).”
“Back to Terra though - her change to a creature that’s magitek in nature has afforded her an oddly wide variety of true magic which a purely synthetic creature should have difficulty drawing on. The traditional three elements of fire, ice and lightning are at her beck and call, making her a mage of sorts if we were to look at her from the sense of a creature who had always lived in this world.”
“She’s living in Might’s capital now while happily letting herself be poked and prodded by curious researchers trying to figure out what makes her tick, I chanced to meet her and talk with her and get a sense for her as a person. I was told by a friend more familiar with them that Protogen often have a sort of “hive mind” they’re connected to, but if she ever had one to begin with she’s no longer connected to it.”
“She seems a bit… off and spacy in ways that remind of Zephyr, albeit more lucid, and frequently stares into the sky in a wool-gathering manner. I suspect her re-awakening on such a different world and being out of contact with other Protogen has her in a state of constant confusion as she learns. Undoubtedly, the fact our world is relatively primitive compared to a society that can create artificial life is also throwing her off. As I always do with new transplants, I’m going to make sure to do my best to make her feel comfortable in this world.”
“Speaking for her nature, as is evident from this writing she identifies as female pronouns-wise and has a feminine voice, though “inspection” has shown she’s interesex and possesses both sets (I’m unfamiliar with gender norms of Protogen but I understand that they can change entire body parts easily, so perhaps it’s a preference she added herself?)”
“One of the most interesting things however is one only afforded to me as a creature that can view souls. Very few synthetic creatures like golems have souls that aren’t caused by necromancy, but in her I saw a… fascinating thing, a tiny spark of a soul like one wasn’t there before but is growing. I asked around and was given the description of Animism; the concept that anything treated well enough can develop a soul and true sentience. I wonder if this is the case for all Protogen, for the ones that find individuality, or a unique circumstance to her?”
“Sadly, her memories were damaged by her time in stasis, so if she was even active when the ship was functional, answers about the Cathedral’s origins won’t be obtained any time soon. Still, she’ll hopefully have a fairly okay time in Might and not be a pariah for being such an advanced synthetic being on a mid-tech planet. Mention of "upgrades" has been made, so if needed I will portal her to a place with other protogen to help her quality of life.”
“As an aside, one of the magics she has is a simple resurrection spell - how she learned it I have no idea, but it at least makes her safe for the “interests” that tend to pop up here and there.”

And welcoming my latest character, Terra! A magitek protogen who I’ve adopted and adapted to my canon.
As mentioned in the story, Terra’s been slightly altered by Sedd’s magical nature to work on pure magic rather than electrical energy, which has also altered her somewhat to be able to bring to bear intense magical power. (There’s a reference between her name and powerset, if you can catch it).
I was wanting a 12th character to make my cast an even number, and a poll on my twitter and follower friends landed on protogen, so I wanted to either get one custom made, or get one adopted when they jumped out at me, and that chance came sooner than I thought!
As far as it goes, I’m not great at writing for science-fictiony characters, but she has a lot of potential for everything one could think of, as well as my usual focused bouts of debauchery. I’ll be looking forward to experimenting with her!

I LOVE HER- she’s so pretty!
Could the connection be a talent for Geomancery, by any chance?
