The passengers of flight 318 let out a collective gasp of shock and apprehension as turbulence the likes of nothing they had ever experienced seemed to jolt the entire aircraft. Those who had been trying to slumber away a large chunk of the tedious journey were jolted awake and had to hold onto their arm rests for stability as the ‘fasten seatbelt’ light immediately turned back on. A few of the more anxious passengers fearfully looked out of the windows, afraid of such violent shaking. The minority of those traveling on the airplane had experienced turbulence in the past and simply tried to relax until it was over.
Outside of the plane was only a field of whiteness brought about by the clouds surrounding the aircraft. The violent shaking was made even more unnerving because nobody could see anything outside of the plane besides the clouds. Mutterings turned to yelling, and the reassurances from the pilot that the turbulence was nothing to be worried about did very little to the passengers. The cause may have been a brewing storm or jet streams. It wasn’t until the plane exited the massive cumulonimbus did the passengers realize that the turbulence was not caused by natural phenomenon. Screams erupted throughout the cabin as a truly massive figure came into view. It was larger than any mountain and seemed to cast miles and miles of land into dark shadow. Those sitting in window seats pressed their faces to the plexiglass to try and see just how tall the figure was.
Clouds momentarily obscured the upper half of the unfathomably large being until a handpaw swept through the floating white puffs and began to dissipate when they came into contact with the warm furry hand. Another violent burst of turbulence shook the aircraft so strongly that many of the passengers felt sick. A truly enormous gray tail idly swayed behind the creature, blowing away more clouds and no doubt ravaging the land behind him. The giant’s face was eventually revealed and those who gazed upon it initially thought that the being was a raccoon- but once the rest of his appearance was taken in the passengers realized that he was in fact a tanuki.
The tanuki was so large in size that despite the fact the airplane was flying miles over the ground, his form was nearly impossible to take in in its entirety. His eyes were brown, and the characteristic spiral of different colored fur was just a darker hue of the pleasant gray that seemed to make up his fur pattern. The end of his tail as well as his wrist seemed to also share the darker gray, although the terrified passengers could not see most of his fur due to the outfit he wore. A yellow collar, an orange and white hoodie, blue shorts, and a pair of equally yellow Converse high tops comprised the tanuki’s outfit. His enormous tail continued to sway excitedly behind him and a smile spread across his handsome face.
Evasive maneuvers were attempted to get as far away from the Godlike being as possible, but despite the aircrafts speed, getting to safety was easier said than done. The tanuki had to be dozens of miles in size and every simple movement he made would only make getting away even harder. The worst thing was the calm and carefree smile on the giant’s face. He seemed not to be aware of just how massive he was. It was as though he was just standing in a grassy field and those around him were just so small that they did not even register to him. The God’s handpaw momentarily traveled to his pocket and a phone, nearly ten miles in size, was pulled out. The tanuki simply typed for a few moments, his smile broadening as he did so. Once he had sent whatever message he had typed out his eyes moved back to the landscape around him and his left foot began to lift.
Screams grew even more frantic from within the cabin as hundreds of passengers saw the sprawling rubber sole of the tanuki’s Converse lift from the earth and swing forward. Miles and miles of diamond patterned rubber soared higher into the sky before lowering back down. Displaced air shot off in every direction, nearly knocking the plane off course and no doubt causing mass destruction for any city or town in the giant’s vicinity. The unaware tanuki’s foot sank back into the earth and with it came a shockwave so powerful that miles of land around his shoe seemed to get instantly razed to the ground. The forested area the giant stood on was reduced to twigs and uprooted vegetation. With just a simple step so much of the landscape was forever decimated.
Before the realization of what the passengers had just witnessed sank in, the right foot lifted up just as high as the left had. The tanuki God was going to continue his walk forward with no regard for what was in his way. The enormous yellow sneaker rose up, allowing billions of tons of compacted earth to rain off from the cold rubber of his shoes sole. What few clouds remained were blown away into nothingness as the giant stepped down and wiped out another few miles of forest. The content smile on his handsome face did not falter as his feet sank deeper into the fragile earth. With one massive step forward, the tanuki was now 50 miles closer to the airplane that was swerving to try and get away from the turbulence caused by displaced air being blasted towards them. The terror felt by the passengers only grew in intensity as the giant’s tail began to wag a bit faster.
The wall of gray fur swept side to side like a mountainous wreaking ball, leaving swathes of devastated landscape in its wake. Towns and forests were blown away like sawdust and the God seemed completely unaware of the horrific consequences every minor movement he made had. The pilot’s voice kept yelling over the intercom, trying to reassure the passengers that they would be able to get to safety but it was clear to them that he knew that escape would not be possible. The tanuki had already lifted his foot once more and began to move forward. Time seemed to dilate somewhat as the enormous calves swept passed and assaulted the aircraft with winds so powerful that the right wing of the plane was bent upward. Terrified screaming rose up even louder as the airplane began to spiral out of control, swept up in the passing winds, as well as being damaged to the point that flying away would be impossible. Hundreds of terrified passengers shrieked in despair as the God walked on, his tail swishing right into the damaged aircraft.
There had only been a split second that those still fearfully gazing out the window saw the furry mass approaching before everything went black. In an instant the airplane had been swatted out of existence and all those on board were forever lost. The titan simply walked on, none the wiser of all the lives his tail had just ended.

The East Coast was in total disarray as news of a God sized tanuki quickly spread. Although it was hard to pinpoint exactly where the giant had come from, it was clear from the trail of destruction traveling across the entire country, that the massive being had come from the West Coast. Hundreds of cities had been wiped off the face of the map in under 15 minutes. Over 80 million souls had been lost and nothing the military could do could halt the God’s movements. Everything less than nuclear weapons had been unleased at the tanuki, although the most it did was cause him to pause to scratch the part of his shin the missiles had struck. Converse the size of some small European countries reduced towns and cities into mush, compacted deep into the earth or against the signature sole of the iconic footwear.
Evacuations had been under way, but a quarter of an hour was not nearly enough time for citizens to seek shelter. To make matters worse, the tanuki seemed to not even notice the carnage he was causing beneath his feet. Some metropolises were spared by sheer luck, while others were grinded away without second thought. The fact that the God was just aimlessly wandering around made the already terrified population go into a frenzy. The 100-mile-tall titan cleared entire states in a few steps at most and was demolishing areas he did not even step on due to his wagging tail and mighty shockwaves. Screaming and sirens were not heard and were quickly snuffed out as the God’s shoe came crashing down from the heavens. What were once massive cities were now bits of debris buried a mile or two into the earth inside of a shoe print.
The tanuki had only taken a momentarily pause outside of Pittsburgh to check his phone. Dozens of millions in surrounding towns and cities watched in absolute horror as the giant smiled down at his phone and slowly lowered it. The inhabitants of Pittsburgh wailed in shock and horror as the tanuki’s left foot slowly lifted high above their entire city. Hundreds of thousands of people were nothing but unseen specks of dust to the God who now had his foot looming above their city and surrounding towns around them. Their screams went unnoticed and the rubber sole that had claimed so many cities already began to lower at a constant alarming pace. The rumbling air drowned out the sounds of chaotic panic and even the destruction. The sole of the tanuki’s shoe buckled skyscrapers instantly, but there was no time for the populace to react to the falling debris around them. In under a second the yellow sneaker had slammed down flat onto a huge chunk of Pennsylvania. There was no malice in the God’s actions. He had not violently stomped down onto the city to exterminate everyone within it. He had just simply taken a step, carelessly wiping away nearly half a million people without even realizing what he had done.
With every step he took the microscopic inhabitants of the country suffered. There was little people in his path could do but pray that they would somehow be spared a crushing death beneath his sneakers. Military intervention continued to have no effect on stopping the God’s murderous stroll. Those on the East Coast watched the handsome young tanuki approaching, his tail wagging behind him as his gorgeous brown eyes only gave the ground a cursory glance. The boring expanse of green seemed to not draw his interest, nor did the puddle that separated him from Europe. Those in Raleigh all the way up to New York City could see the unfathomably large tanuki approaching from the west. Each thunderous footstep shook the entire continent and caused weaker structures in other states crumble to the ground. Those to the south let out sighs of relief as the titan seemed to be heading up towards New England. His high-top sneakers ravaged Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and most of New York in a matter of seconds. Survivors between his miles long feet shrieked in terror as the “Converse All Star” logo towered above them. The smell of canvas, rubber, and paw musk washed over the land for dozens of miles around. The Godlike tanuki tapped his right foot and seemed to be pondering something. Those beneath him continued to try and plead for mercy, hoping that he would somehow hear them. It was all in vain, however. A moment later the huge wall of white rubber shifted and bulldozed everything in its way.
Hundreds of thousands of lives were effortlessly extinguished as the tanuki dragged his foot closer to the other, removing any chance that people would have survived between his feet. Albany had been removed from existence by his left foot, but New York City itself had somehow survived the initial stomp onto New York. Over a dozen million people gazed upwards in fear of the yellow mountain of canvas and rubber that casted the entire metropolis into a dark shadow. Then, louder than thunder, more violent than a carpet bombing, the giant spoke. It was impossible to understand what he had said. Whatever remaining window in New England was shattered and those nearest the God felt their ears ringing. Whatever he had said did not bode well for the citizens of New York City, however. A moment after the tanuki had spoken his right foot had slowly lifted up from the ground, swaying for a few seconds above the entirety of the city and even bits of New Jersey that were not compacted deep into a Converse shoe print.
Those who dared look up at their doom saw that just beyond the toe of the sneaker that was about to plunge down, the God seemed to be looking right at them. The expression on his face was that of curiosity. Many believed that the tanuki might have finally noticed them. They rejoiced and screamed as loudly as they could, begging for him to stop. The excitement was soon replaced with renewed terror as a single booming word rumbled from above. This one however was just barely able to be understood.
“MOSS?”
The shoe began its plunge downwards, blocking out the God’s face and almost all light. The dark underside of the sneaker rumbled ever closer. Time seemed to slow down for the germ sized inhabitants of the city. Their lives flashed before their eyes and the shoes descent seemed to take entire minutes before everything suddenly vanished.

Mitch smiled broadly to himself as he walked across the grassy plains he had found himself in. Summer had finally begun but the weather was still rather mild and enjoyable. The tanuki had decided to enjoy it while he could and was determined to take a nice walk before the sun went down.
The ground seemed to buckle a little under his feet, reminding him faintly of walking on sand or perhaps gravel. With every step he took, Mitch noticed that his shoe had left a near perfect imprint in the grass. He found this slightly amusing and continued walking, occasionally finding himself stepping through fog. His surroundings were rather bland, but he did not mind much. Every few steps he felt a satisfying crunch beneath his shoes. He assumed that he had simply trodden on a twig or something similar and usually did not even bother glancing down at his feet. Very rarely would he bother deviating from straight line he had decided to walk in. Occasionally he noticed the ground change color. Near to where he started, he saw much of the grass turn into an unappealing brown or reddish color. All the same, the ground sank in beneath his feet and more of the lovely little crunches were felt under his rubber soles.
Mitch would sometimes slow down to enjoy a calming breeze or take in his surroundings. These brief pauses in his stroll would only further torment the unseen people trapped beneath him. He made his way eastward, his tail wagging while he felt the ground crackle underfoot. In the distance he could see a large puddle cutting through the grass. It was large enough that he might have to jump over it, or risk getting his shoes wet. The tanuki dragged his feet slightly and stopped walking as he neared the puddle. As he prepared to continue forward, he felt his phone buzz inside his pocket and slowly pulled it out. His smile widened a bit further as he saw a friend was trying to call him but he was not in the mood to answer right now. He calmly texted them, “Taking a walk. Talk soon~” Mitch simply set his phone to ‘do not disturb’ and pocketed it once more.
Eager to continue his stroll, Mitch lifted his foot and took a casual step forward. A crunch a bit stronger than any he had felt so far caused his tail to wag a bit more excitedly. He had to admit that the sensation was delightful. In only a few short steps, the tanuki was so close to the puddle that he could see his reflection in it rippling due to the breeze. He grinned to himself and noticed a few tiny water bugs floating in the puddle. For a few moments he pondered if he should step across the puddle or walk in another direction to see where it took him. A few seconds passed before he decided to head south. He did not want to risk getting his shoes wet so soon into his walk. His foot shifted into the ground, sinking a bit deeper in the process. “Guess I’ll see what’s over here… Probably more of the same.” He said to himself.
As Mitch lifted his shoe he glanced down ahead of him, wanting to make sure to not step in any water. He noticed just how dirty the white rubber of his shoes had gotten but what really caught his eye was the strange gray patch on the grass near his foot. It was very small and the tanuki had to squint to get a better look. His yellow Converse hovered over most of it, but he was pretty sure he knew what it was. He had seen something similar in the past and figured that it was nothing worth caring about. He had considered walking around it but decided to not bother. “Moss?” He wondered out loud before lowering his foot and feeling a very satisfying crunch beneath his rubber sole. He blinked and grinded his foot side to side, feeling the crunching subside while some of the water from the puddle began to drain into the sunken footprint he had caused. Mitch shrugged and lifted his shoe, shaking off some of the mud that had clung to his sole. “Ah well.”
With his curious expression returning back to a calm joyful one, Mitch headed off towards the south. The sun was not going to set for at least another hour and the tanuki would make the best of the remaining time.
