Wind calmly breezed through the forest not far from a lonely cabin in the mountains, trees swaying calmly in the ambience of a rather quiet summer evening. Flashes of light sparked between branches far off in the distance, a blue glow shining through leaves from yards away. The air was pure here, and magic filled it on this special night.
Two dragons lay just beside a river’s edge, accompanied by a single human. His hands were held before the fire in front of him, his eyes deeply focused on the center of the flame. One of the dragons beside him was donned in leather, a saddle rested across his back with the same colored scales as the human’s tunic. The second dragon was larger, adorned with a braided white mane and glowing runes all across the scales on his body. His paws were spread like the human’s, focusing on the fire before them both.
“Alright Max” The larger dragon spoke. “Ready for another go?”
Max nods, taking a deep breath and adjusting his stance. His hands pull back, and suddenly thrust forward, the flame of the fire swelling greatly before the trio.
“Excellent! Hold onto it, keep the flame at that size for a little longer!”
Before the dragon could finish his sentence, Max’s hands falter, the flame subsiding while he stumbles backwards, panting heavily.
“This...is a little more difficult than I thought it would be” He laughs a bit, taking another deep sigh and starting to sit down before the dragon’s paws lift him right up on his feet.
“Ohhhh no you don’t, you’re closer than you think.” He says with a bright smile.
Max responds with a yawn, rubbing his eyes. “We’ve been at this for hours Nix, it’s getting tough to stand!” Nix’s ear flicks, rearing his head to adjust the braids on his mane. “Elemental magic takes patience Max, and you’re so so close.” The other dragon chuffs with a smile, flicking his tail from side to side. “Just think, you’ll be able to conjure flames at any time! It’ll be super helpful.”
Max looks at him with an unamused smile. “Anc, you can breathe flames you goof.” The two of them chuckle together.
“Oh hush you two, let's stay focused so we can rest sooner!” Nix excitedly lifts Max’s hands back into the position they were in before, his palms outstretched towards the fire. The dragon’s paws lift into that same “ready” position, though as Max stares at the fire, his snout lowers beside the human.
“Remember, imagine it as a muscle you’re training. You’ve already gained a foundation in these past few hours, and now is where the real work shows.”
Max nods to his words, taking a much deeper breath this time. His stance widens once more, closing his eyes. All of the noise around him began to fade, focusing on his own heartbeat. He could hear the crackle of the wood in the fire, drawing all attention to that alone.
Max’s hands suddenly thrust forward once again, the flame bursting into a gorgeous blue inferno.
“That’s it Max!” Nix yells out, his paws spreading to control the enormous flame. “This is the one! Hold onto that feeling!” Nix’s expression couldn’t look happier, and Ancagalon gazed to the fire in awe. He didn’t think his rider could come this far so fast, yet here they were. Proud and bewildered by the progress, Max manages to hold the flame for a few moments longer until he collapses onto his back. He gazes up to Nix, huffing in exhaustion with a wide smile on his face.
“Was that good?”
“An excellent start I’d say, you’re well on your way Max”
“I’d say so too!” Anc chimes in, smiling widely with plenty of teeth showing.
“We’ll stop there for today, let’s get you two home.” Nix smiles, proud that his teachings came to fruition. “Don’t stop here though, there’s still plenty of practice to be done on your own!” He chuckles at Max, who smiles and shakes his head before laying right back down, exhausted yet very satisfied as well.
This would be far from the last night of training for the trio, laughter and magic filling the air in the summer sky and onward. Even through the hardest of scenarios, these past moments would carry them forward through the days to come.
I wanted to write a little more for this one since it's a pretty big moment for Anc and Max as far as their development. Max can use magic now, so he'll have one more tool to use on his future travels! All thanks to a great teacher and a wonderful friend.
This fantastic piece was brought about by SEGartworks! She really outdid herself with this piece and Nix and I couldn't be happier with how it turned out. The energy in all of this is so incredibly happy, I love it a ton. <3
Go check out her page! She's got plenty more amazing works and lots soon to come I'm sure. She deserves it!
