The Ali'lae Festival [W/ Mini Story!]
Being an ambassador, emissary, or otherwise foreign policy worker assigned to the Greater Avian Empire is often considered the highest point such a person can achieve. It's a line of positions everyone wants but only few are vetted for, and despite the outwardly cushy and easy vibe it tends to give of, is a very important and sometimes even stressful job. The Avians' fierce philosophy towards peace and unity help many forgot that they are the strongest force, militarily and politically, in the Starscape, and staying on very good terms with them is often the difference between success and failure in just about every field imaginable. Did a corporation upset a avian diplomat over poor working conditions? They will likely find themselves struck with brutal fees and reform demands from their parent empire. Is a terraforming project being undertaken on the fringes of avian space? They better be sure to cordially invite the empire to offer aid, settlers, and opinions on how they colony should function.
This sheer amount of overhanging power and influence is not intentional, merely a unavoidable side effect of the sheer amount of raw power their race has managed to propagate through millennia of internal cooperation and a culture of selflessness. Many consider them a race well worth aspiring to, despite the many difficulties others find in the process of attempting such. So, for now, they have so settle for being the Empire's allies and friends, and that is why joining their foreign office is such a vehemently coveted and high position, which only the best of the best being sent to represent the highest quality of ones own species. Of course, there's always smaller tier positions of interest that many still jockey for, and one of the most desired is that of a cultural emissary.
With the recent explosion of Avian colonization within its own territory, it has begun inviting those outside avian society to join these settlement projects in order to slowly wean away their peoples subconscious sense of isolationism and breed interspecies cooperation and understanding. As such, every new shared colony under avian control asks for at least one cultural emissary per foreign species coming to settle there, to assist their people in adapting and assimilating. Luckily, through hard work and dedication, you managed to push your name to the top of the list to act as the cultural emissary for your species in the newly formed colony of Hanalaei. After a long and exciting space voyage, you managed to arrive the night before the famous Ali'lae Festival.
A avian cultural staple, the Ali'lae festival is a three day long, annual mid-spring celebration of family, love, and fertility. The community comes together to eat, sing, dance, perform, create works of art, and socialize under the night sky, and many outside of avian society who had the honor of partaking often describe the festivities as "second only to a reptilian clan party", which is very high praise indeed. This one was also shaping up to be a particularly big one as well, as it was also celebrating the birth of the colony and a way for the local avians to share their ways with outsiders. After a long nights sleep in your new house so you'd be well rested for the day to come, you ended up spending most of the daylight hours before the party frantically setting up your office and handling work details, needing to get everything squared away before the whole colony shifted focus to the festival. However, once the sun finally began to drop over the horizon, and lanterns and festive lights erupted into gorgeous arrays of color across the entire town, you knew it was time to abandon your work for now. It was time to celebrate!
You hadn't really known what to expect, but somehow they were still exceeded. The food and drink seemed endless, and the avian diet seemed to pair very well with your own while also introducing you to all kind of new foodstuffs to try, and the drink was even better. You'd heard praise sung left and right about avian wine, but actually drinking it was an experience all on its own. While other foreigner like you, unsure of proper dress code, were clad in everything from cargo shorts to full suits and dresses, the Avians themselves had all donned gorgeous and... often unexpectedly revealing costumes. You'd heard that the avians were a lot more open with each other than most species, but you weren't quite expecting to see topless females [even if most avian girls were flat chested], and very scantily clad males wearing what was effectively fancied up boxers. The bisexuality of avian culture was on full blast too, as this was also a festival of love, and a perfect excuse for many young Avians to find a cute guy or girl to start dating, or for couples to propose, and from your count there were almost exactly as many same sex relationships and traditional ones, which was heartwarming in a way.
However, not even half-way through the night, your focus would be abruptly changed when you passed by one of the decks people were using to dance and sing, and your eyes fell on a particularly beautiful figure. It actually took you a moment to recognize them, thanks to the very revealing and bright costume they'd donned in place of the far more reserved and conservative governmental outfit they'd had before. It was Lari, your counter-part in the emissary office, the one who helped their own people understand the foreigners better, basically doing what you did but in reverse. Before you'd even managed to sum up the courage to go say hi, their eyes fell on yours and they quickly jotted over to chat. Androgynist was an infamous part of the avian culture, partially due to how similar males and females could look, and how most avian species had genders whose voices were far closer sounding than most, making it difficult to distinguish male from female in some cases without some serious external help. Lari was one of those, a lovely Alibian Hawk with a slender, tall form, a taut belly, and just enough stats in both categories to make it near impossible to judge what they were even up close. Their voice was also a near perfect median between a deep, tomboyish females and light, whimsical males.
Seeing them like this was a bit of a shock to the system, but mostly due to how attractive you realized they were, without even knowing what was between their legs quite yet. Noting that Lari didn't seem to be with anyone, you somewhat sheepishly ask if they are single, a question they reply to with a cute giggle and a nod, before you feel their soft, large wing-like hand close around yours, and before you knew it you were being led to the dance floor.
"You and I are going to be working together a lot for the foreseeable future, so let's get to know each other real well! Come on, I'll show you how to dance the avian way if you show me how your kind does it after, deal?~" They chimed playfully, seeming eager to spend time with you. You couldn't ignore the way you felt your heart flutter, or just how good Lari looked working that body in their costume.
Uh oh, it looked like the Ali'lae festival might be working on you a lot better than you'd expected!
