The following is a bio card for one of the main supporting characters in my series "HISS," a mercenary who goes by 'John'.
John's an ex-Phoenix agent; the overreaching remnants of government control, now a member of Cerberus, a mercenary group that now exists to bring an end to the Blackouts ravaging the land. One of the original founding members of the group, John was partners with another ex-Phoenix agent named 'Sloan', who created Cerberus and recruited John as his first official member. John's personality made it hard to really "get close" to him as a friend, but Sloan trusted him unconditionally as a skilled soldier and strategist. Despite John's seniority, after Sloan's death, the younger and more fiery Nara took charge of the group because the others both trusted and respected her more. John never questioned the choice or raised a stink. But despite being one of Nara's right hand men, there remains a deep-seeded animosity between the two that stretches far beyond who's really in charge.
Some tidbits:
- John still has contacts within Phoenix who are loyal to him, which allows the group to remain a step ahead of Phoenix, in case they ever decide to crack down on Cerberus. It also allows the gang of mercenaries to follow leads that Phoenix may have.
- John's the oldest member of the group, not counting Jian when he later joins on an unofficial capacity.
- When Sloan was still alive, he told Nara that John once mentioned having a wife and young daughter, strongly implying that either the family left him or that they're no longer alive.
- John's ambidextrous, allowing him to perfectly wield weapons in either left or right hand.
- John's sawed-off shotgun is decidedly "old fashioned" compared to the hardware of his comrades.
- John's design and name are VERY loosely based off of Terminator's John Connor, but not in a futuristic sort of way.
- "John" is an alias, like everyone's names in the group, short for "John Smith," another old fashioned element to John as a character. It's implied his dog tags show his real name, but he keeps them hidden underneath his vest.
- Though John is respected among Cerberus, he's largely unliked, both because of something that occurred shortly before Sloan's death, and because he has a very cold, near-emotionless personality that makes it very hard to like him.
- Incidentally, his cold personality was why I chose David Matranga for his headcanon voice. I've said a few times that I think Matranga sounds too old for Todoroki, so I'd love to hear him play slightly older adult characters with a similar personality. Though, in John's case, there's no angst.
- Lev is the closest thing John has to a friend among Cerberus. The two often work together and despite John's detachment, he's always the first to back Lev up in a pinch. And unlike Nara, Lev does show some warmth towards John.
- John's uniform is loosely based off of Big Boss' attire in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.
- John is surprisingly durable, capable of taking hits unlike nearly anyone else in the group. He's also been shot more times than anyone in the group. Thankfully, his gear has always protected him from anything fatal.
- During lunch, John is never present in the food hall. Nara implies that it's because the group means nothing to John, so he'd rather just eat by himself instead somewhere. It's another reason among the many why Nara harbors some resentment towards her lieutenant despite trusting him enough to be one of the only three high ranking members of Cerberus.
- John is a very skilled hand-to-hand combatant, who excels in CQC (Closed-Quarters Combat), better at grappling and disarming foes instead of a straight up boxing match.
