Wrote an animated SDF shader starring my imp fella Dip performing some classic mitosis.

heck thank you!!
and it's legit just hours and hours of trial and error and constant improvisation ahaha. I think if I had to sit down and plot this on paper without a computer I'd be at it forever, so I had to do a lot of punching in numbers with vague ideas, constantly compiling it again and again, and pretty slowly fleshed it out.
I can get pretty in depth about the process if you're curious, but a good resource on SDFs and raymarching functions is Inigo Quilez's page.

And also a video explaining his process for character modeling, which (I haven't seen it all but) I think it's similar to my process?

Using basic things like sphere and cube distance functions, rotating/offsetting and combining a bunch of them into a scene (and importantly, using a magic function called smoothmin() which can turn those basic shapes into blobbier combinations), I can model out Dip pretty easily. It's super cool since you don't have the limitations of normal geometry and can make it super whacky & organic, but you have a whole new set of limitations you have to work with.
