Summer, 1329
A blazing hot summer day found Mera back at the Bald Hill oasis chatting with Thergamorth over lunch while lazing in the cool shade of their hideout, a hunted stag in front of each of them.
*There seem to be a bumper crop of deer this year.* The bronze dragon mused as he took a bite out of a particularly fat individual.
Thergamorth studied his meal, poking at the antlers of the large 14-point buck. *You ever wonder where these particular deer come from? They don't seem to be the kind normally around here.*
*Hm?* Mera shrugged. * Well, they always get really large around Comptons Cove. I think they migrate over the mountains around this time for some reason.*
*That’s the Land of the Sabines. Isn’t it?*
*Yah. I ran into some of them in Compton’s Cove a few years back when I was trying to avoid those getting hunted. It is a strange land and they are strange people.* Mera smiled. *They did hold back those dragonslayers though. The Sabines and humans hate each other.*
*Makes sense.*
* I wonder how the Sabines see this war.*
*They probably support the Other Men.*
*The probably do. But humans, they are pretty presistent. Not exactly stubborn like Duregaren, but like they just won’t stop. The humans keep attacking the woodfolk, years, decades even, and they keep losing, but they keep pushing, and they slowly drive them back. You’re seeing that in this war against the Other Men. They’ve lost tens of thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands of people, but they keep fighting.*
The younger dragon sighed and attempted to ignore the topic by getting up and cleaning himself.
*Can you believe that? Those humans, like badgers that won’t let go. * Mera continued. He got the hint from his friend, but was kinda talking just to get his thoughts off his chest after visiting Stanton. *I don't think there's enough Other Men to fight all the humans, and despite Hannah’s Field’s they’re still nowhere near victory. People are saying they are recruiting from the other peoples of Nalbin. The ogres are in the war now, and so are the goblins.*
Thergamorth continued his tongue-bathing *So-* he uttered between dexterous licks of delicate body parts, *-those humanoids have always been close to the Northerners. Not surprising they joined up.*
*Will others? Maybe the Sabines and Duregaren will too. There are rumors that the humans are recruiting gryphons.*
Thergamorth looked up and made a face. *Really? Bullshit Mera. No way that could happen and if by some strange magic the humans did, there’s no way they could win with those birdbrains on their side.*
The bronze dragon shrugged. *I dunno, this war is starting to get real big and complicated.*
