"Werewolves are born or bitten. It is a recessive trait that is only guaranteed when both parents are werewolves, so sometimes single parents are faced with a difficult decision. Once a werewolf has bitten someone, whether intentionally or not, it is their responsibility to assist with the recovery and teach them. Shifting can be done faster and more comfortably with repetition. A werewolf's instincts may be more difficult to control, especially when shifted, so they must learn restraint. A young or new werewolf will have trouble resisting the urge to chase something that is running from them, attack something that looks like prey, and sometimes flee from loud or startling noises. Regardless of the inner conflict, werewolves retain their intellegence equally in both forms. "
Calendar information: This is my image for July in the 2011 Werewolf Calendar. You can visit the website at http://www.werewolfcalendar.com/ and/or visit our group on deviantart (werewolf-calendar). We're in our fourth year, and orders open September 1st, with the first 100 orders getting a sticker and the four bookmark set for free! You can join the mailing list to get a reminder before the 1st, and the mailing list also gets to see the art before the rest of the internet, as well as get wallpapers we don't include on our website. Its worth doing, I think .
Art Information: I think that a new werewolf, before learning to hunt or anything else, would have to be taught WHERE to safely be a werewolf. I also believe in semi-immortal werewolves (very fast healing), so with the bite scars still showing, this may be within a few days of the bite. There will be no trace after 4-5 days. Here, she's wearing her car keys around her neck (yes, I bet she'd tape them together or something but...it had to LOOK like keys, okay? It is a visual representation after all ) because they've driven out to somewhere remote. She's being introduced to a new place that she can call home from now on.
So, for this one, I wanted to try doing everything different than I usually do (rinse and repeat...bad habit), and I think I succeeded. I used a bigger brush on the fur. I'm very happy with this but will still be tweaking it, so you're free to send crit to my email or via note (well, you're always free to, but I'm welcoming it in this case).

good lord. this piece is amazing. gotta love werewolf art that's made by women in this fandom. you, sugarpoultry, darknatasha, woldenwolfen ect.
This is definitely a favorite. I love the art work in this picture to the finest detail, but what I love the most is the car keys.
There are certain ways to know if someone is a werewolf in human form. If they do not wear a shirt and spend time walking around with other guys who don't wear shirts, you've got your first clue. Also if they, while in human form, ever chase after a thrown Frisbee, ball, or stick and grab it with their mouths, you can be quite certain you have a werewolf on your hands.
looks like someone is a big fan of http://goldenwolf.deviantart.com/
Uhm, hi there! I know you mean no harm by this comment but I SINCERELY do NOT see any resemblance to goldenwolf's art here. o.O
Yes, unfortunately to us that can be quite offensive. Aside from the fact that they're werewolves, which she has no more claim to than the rest of the world, there is no significant resemblance. I am a big fan of werewolves, though!
Oops! I guess I was just thinking out loud there since it reminded me of her! I apologize if I came off sound mean!
Its ok. Like I said i know you mean no harm by your comments of this nature, but I'm just going to put it out there and say that being compared to another artist can often be more offensive than flattering--even if the artist is popular and talented. Most artists really try hard to either have their own style and "uniqueness"--so in the end being compared to another is usually offensive for that reason. It really depends on the situation--but this is usually the case.
LOVE THE DESCRIPTION AS WELL AS THE PIC! :D
It reminds me of a combination of "Blood & Chocolate" as well as "Wolf's Rain" :3

hmm...those mountains in the background look very familiar...as if i had seen them before...*cough* previously posted tutorial *cough* x3 lol its funny how some things i can notice but the more obvious things, i never notice -,- anyway, picture looks great by the way :D
That's some crazy awesome detail in that fur, I do believe this is my favorite of your pieces to date!
The car keys are a nice touch, and a very subtle way to tell that these arent "wild" werewolves. I really love how you seem to make every calendar pic better than your previous one. It tells a lot about you, as an artist. You really want to make your art better and you succeed.
Wow, thanks! Definately one of the best comments I've gotten on a piece of art! I push really hard on these, since they come once a year, but you never know if you're going in the right direction...I'm glad to hear it is liked!
Woa Didn't even notice the keys at first, second, or third look. Something else on her kept drawing my attention.
But wow their anatomy is just... wow.
Oh and did I mention wow?

Oh, this is gorgeous. I really need to be buying these calanders every year. Personally, I think it makes sense to have the key ring on a string about the neck. Without clothes, where else are you supposed to put them that's still comfortable? Your werewolves are amazing, especially with their fur. The lighting also looks amazing, and the view, even as apicture, looks great. This piece is just lovely.
I do have one nitpick though, which may or may not qualify. I have a noticable scar across my head (from ear to ear across the top), and it's only visible when my hair is cut pretty short, as in maybe an inch or so of length. Given how long wolf hair presumably is (I'm assuming closer to 2, maybe 3 inches as a werewolf), the bite mark scars should perhaps have been obscured a bit by the surrounding hair, which it looks like you did to the parts nearest the neck. But, seeing as how the bite was perhaps supposed to be something of a focal point in this piece, I can understand why you may have wished to highlight the scars.

REALLY love this! What a beautiful face on that wolf! I really enjoy how the fur was rendered. Do you mind sharing your brush? I am trying to learn how to render fur properly in photoshop :)
Oh! The brush is actually just a hard 5 px brush with low opacity. I didn't paint every hair this time, but I did paint each stroke. This method, you just paint the shape of the fur and don't worry about details.
i noticed myself painting each strand of fur, especially on my "enter super nova" practice piece. I started clumpting up the details more recently as you described here, thank you!
Well, I've seen many artists have success painting every hair. I think that once you start trying to paint detailed fur, you've already set yourself on a path towards what you're going to be able to do well and how you'll do it. No matter how many tutorials I looked at when I was learning (or now), it may alter what I'm doing, but it wouldn't actually bring me closer to another person's method...just something new for me. For me, I was trying to do every hair and it was limiting the color variation and the texture on the subject. Others do amazing with it. Its all about what works for you, so try what interests you and try other things too!
The color, detail, and beauty of this picture and the characters is all absolutely striking. The setting is a gorgeous place and the wolves...well, beautiful is an understatement. Lovely artwork, Myenia!
kept seeing the little image of this on the advert. was really keen to see it full size. i think this is my favourite image from the calendar that i have seen. this is insanely good. the head of the nearest wolf is especially appealing. really nice lighting, excellent fur texture and nice variations in fur colour.
Thanks, I really appreciate that! You'll change your mind soon though, I think. Some of my favorites for this year are yet to be uploaded. I had to step it up to keep up with some of the awesome done for 2011.
Absolutely fan-fucking-tastic! That shewolf is BEAUTIFUL!
I love these realistic werewolf pics, especially the more peaceful ones like this :) Great work, the detail is AMAZING!
wonderful work :)
of course i'm wondering why he bit her, but i'm nosy that way
Damn i love the way you draw fur and bgs! This is quite breathtaking and i love that scenery
You're so good! It seems like only recently I remember you musing about how you were self-taught and (by your own lights) not up to much, yet this piece is just amazing -- depth, tone, light, scale, all those things about art that baffle and delight me. And lovely werewolves. I'm glad you're happy with this because you absolutely should be!
I've seen your rendition of your month also goldenwolf's, and woah, really amazing stuff.. thanks for sharing with us :>
you=win. i am floored in amazement fellow artist. u are officially welcome to join the clan ANYtime you wish. it would be a true honor. consider it a formal invite from the master ninja of the largest clan on the net.

That landscape and... well, everything about this piece, actually, are quite astonishing.

I will not be at Oklacon. TFF, yes, I will be there.
I still come back to this piece and I still simply marvel at the quality of light in it. Truly extraordinary.
Environment art taken to the next level! My friend has been a huge fan of the werewolf calender and I think he owns all of them. This piece always stood out as incredibly beautiful with it's bright coloring and stunning environment
