"Once upon a time, there was a very silly and unwise man. This man wanted nothing more than to know that wonders and terrors existed beyond the drudgery of day to day life, and so he searched for them.
One day, the man found what he was seeking. Or rather, his terrors found him.
A beast cold as death fell from the wood upon the foolish young man and drank his life. And yet, the man did not die. The sun burned his flesh, and he found no breath in his throat, but he walked the world still.
The strange woman who took his warmth whispered to him, "Come, child. Feast upon your kin, and I will teach you our ways." But the man would not learn. He was afraid of the cold woman, and even more so of himself, so he ran.
The man ran and ran, into the deepest parts of the wood. Into the parts no one could find by searching, and from which no one ever returned. He ran until he was sure he could lose the woman, and sure he could lose himself.
The fool did not know how far he ran, or how many dangers he fled, but eventually a thunderous voice broke through his terror. "YOU DARE INTRUDE ON MY DOMAIN, COLD-ONE?"
The man could only stare in awe at the great stag that had spoken. He had already found his terrors, but now he had found his wonders. He opened his heart to the hart, sharing his story, his curiosity, and his passion, begging to learn more of the glamorous place he had arrived.
The great stag was intrigued by the creature before him, and so he agreed to take the foolish man under his hoof. He would breath warmth back into the man's lungs and stoke the fire in his heart once more, if the man would walk and carry out his will where he could not - the lands of men.
Thus the unwise man who had died in the cold night walked worlds again with new purpose, changing with each journey. No longer a man, or the cold thing he had become, but something altogether new. Those travels, however, are a tale for another time..."
Edmund Wulfhart. Heir of Cernunnos. The Duke of Dusk and Fireflies. Knight of the Creeping Wood.
Ed is a character I ended up creating for a Vampire the Masquerade game that went off the rails and has since spun off to become his own character. I love the weird thing he is, and thought the best way to explain it would be a faerie tale.
