Chapter 2
The next day started like any other day in Adventure Bay. It was bright and sunny, and everybody seemed to be in a good mood. Ryder was feeding the pups breakfast, Captain Turbot was snacking on some squid jerky, Katie was opening up her pet parlor, and Mayor Goodway was tending to her tulip garden, while Chickaletta was being ignorant of everything around her, thus confirming Vector’s hunch (without anybody knowing it). Mr. Porter opened up his restaurant and grocery store, Porter’s Cafe, and Alex was heading off to school. Al and Yumi tended to their crops.
But no day in Adventure Bay ever ended up a normal day, unless one counted the city’s people having troubles and needing the PAW Patrol’s help as a normal day. It was rare for everybody to go about their business without an emergency that needed the PAW Patrol’s help, even if the problem was nothing more than a cat up a tree, or if a kite got stuck, or even if Alex just lost a pencil of his and needed advice on how to find it. (Alex had lost his pencil that day, but found it on his own; he had simply forgotten where he placed it, but had placed it somewhere so he wouldn’t lose it.) Since the pups could switch between regular and anthro forms now, Ryder had the extra challenge of determining which of the two forms was appropriate for the scenario taking place.
In most cases, the pups were still able to work as regular pups, but today wasn’t going to be that kind of day.
Dr. Eggman sat in his wrecked Eggmobile without noticing where he was, having been beaten by Sonic (again). “Blast that hedgehog!” he grumbled. “Why can’t I ever do anything without him getting in the way? He and his friends are just like the mosquito bites I get; they never stop biting!” Then he took a look around where he was. “Wait a minute; have I been here before?” he said.
As it happened, Eggman landed in Foggy Bottom, Mayor Humdinger’s former place of residence. “There’s absolutely nobody here,” he said as he walked over to the former secret lair Humdinger once used. Bit by bit, it was all starting to come back to him. “Oh, I get it now,” he said. “This is where I not only had to deal with that hedgehog, but I had to deal with those annoying dogs. Not to mention that psychopath in the purple top hat.” He walked over to the secret lair, which had an open door since all the technology was broken from the last time the PAW Patrol invaded it (due to rescuing a prisoner of Humdinger’s), and because Humdinger was forever in prison, he hadn’t been able to fix anything.
“Odd,” the mad scientist commented. “There’s nobody here. Where’d everybody go? Why isn’t there any lasers?” (Humdinger had his nephew attack Eggman from all angles, but it took the PAW Patrol and the blue blur and company to ultimately kick Eggman out of this world (literally). “I guess I can use this as an alternate hideout. Then again, I’d have to deal with those dogs. Oh, what the heck? Let’s give it a try anyway! If it doesn’t work, I’ll just go back to where I was. I can still launch an assault on that neighboring town.”
Eggman took some time to repair his Eggmobile before relocating all the technology of his old hideout into what was now his new hideout.
Eggman’s path, however, took him across Adventure Bay, and Mayor Goodway was the first to spot him. “Wait, what is that?” she asked. “Is that...that crazy madman again?”
“What crazy madman?” Captain Turbot asked.
“That crazy madman!” Mayor Goodway showed Captain Turbot a picture of Dr. Eggman.
“The one that famous blue hedgehog battles?”
“Yes; him! THIS IS A TOTAL DISASTER! WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO? WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO? WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO?”
“Keep calm and call Ryder; that’s what we’re going to do.” The captain took out his cell phone and called Ryder.
At the Lookout, the pups were playing catch with a Frisbee when Ryder’s pup-pad rang. “Hi, Captain Turbot,” he greeted. “What’s going on?”
“Mayor Goodway and I caught sight of that Dr. Eggman character. I don’t know what precarious plot he is planning, but he’s going back and forth across Adventure Bay multiple times.”
“I just know he’s going to attack us!” Mayor Goodway interjected.
“Maybe he’s just looking for a new hideout,” Ryder suggested. “Either way, we will check it out. No mad scientist is too mad; no Mighty Pup is too small! Oh, and let’s call Sonic and his friends about it, too.” He slid out his pup-pad’s mechanism and changed the logo to the Mighty Pup symbol. “Mighty Pups, to the Lookout!”
“Ryder needs us!” all the pups exclaimed, excitedly racing towards the Lookout. They weren’t able to make it into the elevator without crashing, though, since Marshall had a tendency to trip over everything. This time, though, he tripped over a football, and as soon as he landed, he announced, “Touchdown!” The pups then did an imitation of a marching band playing a fight song before having a good laugh.
The elevator rose as the PAW Patrol logo on the Lookout changed to the Mighty Pup version, and the flashing green light the pups could see indicated it was an anthro mission, so they all barked in unison, “Ruff! Anthro form!” They became their anthro forms as the Lookout itself changed into the Mighty Pup version, an effect of their mighty meteor. Soon they found themselves on the top floor, and faced Ryder, now wearing his trademark jetpack.
“Ruff! Mighty Pups ready for mighty action, Ryder, sir!” Chase announced as the pups lined up and their hands began to glow.
“Thanks, pups!” Ryder began. “We’ve got big trouble! Do you remember when Sonic the Hedgehog and his friends came to Adventure Bay?”
“That was an exciting time for all of us!” Rocky replied.
“I remember challenging Sonic to a race,” Chase added. “I think it ended in a tie.”
“Well, his arch-nemesis, Dr. Eggman, has been sighted flying back and forth over Adventure Bay, and from what I can see on this map, it looks to me like he’s headed for Foggy Bottom!”
The pups gasped. “But there’s nobody in Foggy Bottom now; it’s a ghost town!” Rubble protested.
“Probably why Eggman opted to go there. I’ll need all paws on deck for this mission; we don’t know what Eggman is up to, but we do know that to beat him properly, we’re going to have to do it with some help.” Ryder swiped the pictures on the pup-pad he wore on his left arm to contact Sonic and friends, and pressed a picture of an outline of Sonic’s head to do so. Given the nature of that group, however, the call was automatically redirected towards the Chaotix Detective Agency (the detective team of Espio, Vector, and Charmy, and in other cases, it had two other members: Knuckles the Echidna and Mighty the Armadillo).
Over at Sonic’s house, he was playing his guitar trying to write a new song with the help of his friends, who all formed their own band, Sonic JAM. He wasn’t getting very far, but he at least had some ideas. He wrote down some notes when the phone began to ring.
“Charmy, get the phone!” Vector called.
“Okay.” Charmy flew over to the phone and picked it up. “Hello?”
“Hello?” Ryder began. “Who is this?”
“This is Charmy Bee of the Chaotix Detective Agency. What can we do for you?”
“This is Ryder, leader of the PAW Patrol in Adventure Bay. I was expecting Sonic to answer.”
“All the calls go to us instead, but we’re friends of Sonic.”
“Oh, good. Can you tell him that we saw Dr. Eggman flying back and forth over the city? We don’t know what he’s doing, but our mayor is worried he’s going to launch an assault on all of us.”
“You sure she’s not just panicking?”
“I’m sure.”
“I’ll let him know.”
“Thanks.” Charmy hung up and proceeded to spread the news, and immediately Sonic declared, “Well, it looks like we’re going to go see our amazing dog pals after all!” The team immediately headed for Adventure Bay, using various modes of transportation, but Tails, as usual, flew his special plane, the Tornado, with Sonic and Shadow as wing-walkers. Knuckles glided all the way, while Vector and his team drove a new jeep they had purchased not too long ago.
Silver and Blaze joined up later on when they discovered what was going on.
After giving the pups further instructions, Ryder called out, “All right! Mighty Pups are on a roll!” He jumped off the Lookout and activated his jetpack as the pups each slid down the special laser chute towards their mighty vehicles. (Although Skye could fly without her mighty plane, she went ahead and opted to fly the plane.) Off they went to investigate, and it wouldn’t be long before the two groups would reunite once more.
