It’s a wonderful day of traveling and exploring for the anthro kenku, or crow as another word of it, Theodore. He’s a skinny bird with black feathers, a dark beak, eyes that glow with golden yellow, wears a navy blue scarf around his waist, and a dark purple clothed shirt that he wears with a hood. Theodore is a scavenger who hunts for gold and jewelry so he could sell it and become the richest bird there is. He carries a tethered bag filled with the previous treasures he collected along the way. His poor legs were beginning to get tired and worn out from the long walking he’s been doing for hours. “Man, I really need to find a place where I can stay for the night. I’m not sure if I can keep walking.” He says to himself while dragging his talons on the dirt path. Not to mention that the bag he was carrying was heavy at the moment, so he was going very slow.
He wasn’t even sure if he ate or drank anything today since all he focused was on finding treasure. It’s now those moments that he wishes that he rains. Most of the time, he hates it when it rains because it soaks his feathers and rusts the gold after finding it buried or hidden. At least there wasn’t anyone to steal his things, that’s the part he hates about traveling. There were times that he was forced to give up his found items to bandits by threatening him with daggers and crossbows. He wishes that someday, he teaches those bandits a lesson on trying to steal from him. As he keeps walking, or mostly dragging his talons, Theadore spots a cave just to the right of the path. The cave looked big compared to his size, damp and dark, and a possible chance that there is a bear inside. The kenku would likely hunt a bear just to cook and eat it since he’s starving at this point.
“Well, here goes nothing.” He drags his talons to the cave, entering inside without any clue about what is ahead of him. As he walks deeper into the cave, his vision turns dark with no source of light besides the sun that shines behind him. “It’s dark in here, where is my lantern?” He puts his bag on the ground and starts to open it up to grab out a lantern of his. The lantern itself isn’t one of those light sources that require a match to lit it up. He shakes it violently and it begins to glow like a firefly. “There, that’s better.” He smiles as he’s got a way to see through the dark. Once Theodore grabs his bag again and places it on his shoulder, he continues his journey inside the cave.
The place looks as if there was a war inside with skeletons and swords lying around the area. It wasn’t the first time the kenku had seen something like this before. His job is to collect the things that the people failed to protect. It’s better for him to go to these kinds of places because it tells him that the treasure is worth something. Just a few steps, he almost falls into this giant pit of spikes with even more skeletons at the bottom. Theodore wonders if they even fought without a lantern. “This place looks like a deathtrap, there must be something valuable inside here.” So he places his bag in a safe place and explores around the cave. All he could find were more skeletons, swords, shields, and a bit of bread on which he eats. It was stale but he was too hungry to be bothered by that. After eating the bread, he continues his search again to find nothing. Now he’s starting to think if someone else was already here after the war.
Just when he thought everything was going to be find, Theadore yelps to a stinging in his rear butt. Turning around, he finds a dart lodged into his buttcheek. “What the!?” He yanks the dart out which makes him yelp again. In anger, he turns around and shouts “Who’s there!? Show yourself!” He takes out his dagger and uses his lantern to light and shine whoever shot a dart at him. He couldn’t hear the sound of footsteps nor someone snickering so it makes him wonder if this was someone who was professional or needing something important that they have to be sneaky about it. Theadore slowly walks around the cave with this weird feeling in his gut, like he was bloated for some reason. “Gosh, my belly is really giving me something.” What he doesn’t see, feel, or hear, is his belly swelling up with silent hissing sounds. Why wasn’t he noticing his basketball-size belly that stretches his clothes? “Ngh, have these clothes gotten smaller on me?” He finally looks down at his belly to understand what was going on with him. “GAH! I’m….swelling up!” It was too late at this point to even try to hide it. His legs, sides, and butt fwomps up and inflates into a pear shape. Theodore was scared and needed to get some help quickly. But how can he when he’s nowhere near a town? He’s in a cave, assuming that he’s not alone, with someone who just shot him with a dart. No way that they’ll try to help him, even if they reveal themselves. “I’m gonna pop!” He screams with more fear as he waddles towards his bag. Just then, this person, or more specifically a fox, snatches up the bag and finally shows herself.
“Thanks for the gold, blimp bird.” The fox said with harshness. “It’s been a long time since I used my secret weapon.” In her paw, it was a blow dart with some extra darts. “This stuff can turn a fur into a nice balloon. Just don’t try to get yourself down those spikes.” Before Theodore could try to speak to her, she runs off with his things. His body starts to turn into an orb shape, his arms and legs were too stiff to even move them. She was right about something, he was definitely a blimp bird now that he was about as huge as a hot air balloon.
“Mmmmph!” He muffles with his cheeks fully blown up. Once his talons couldn’t reach the floor anymore, he waddled side to side, a bit with some rolling towards the cliff. The hissing grows louder with the creaks coming from his body as he could explode at any moment. Still, he muffles in helplessness and fear, getting closer and closer to his bursting fate. The stretching starts to hurt him and the creaks echo the cave. “MMMMPPPPPPHHHHH…..!” He lets out one last muffle as his last words before he believes that he will be nothing but scraps.
Just then…...he stops inflating. The darts just only made him near bursting, which was a good and a bad thing. Theodore has no idea how to deflate or how those darts gave him a swelling time. He sighs with relief but whines with his stretched pain. He tries his best to move around to see if he could get himself out of the cave. Unfortunately, he accidentally rolls the wrong way, right into the cliff. “MMMMMPPPPHHHH!” He muffles in screams, falling right down into the spikes with the loudest bang that shakes the entire cave. Scraps fall onto the ground and on the spikes, like confetti. This didn’t mean that it was over for the bird. He can always regenerate back but has to start all the way over at the beginning, which is him home. Five hundred miles away from where he is. The kenku is going to be really pissed after he gets back to normal.
