This absolutely fantastic piece was commissioned as a gift by my good friend and drawn by the superb artist . I can't thank either enough for this awesome artwork, make sure to check them out!
The piece itself shows off one of the largest planet-bound temples built by the 'Sword of Eredohn', a theocratic nation from my hard science world-building. Said temple was built around an enormous laser device left behind by the precursors, and is the largest of its kind upon the theocracy's homeworld. Observing its somewhat dramatized firing sequence is a single gesan, the species which is the founding race of the Vogelian Supremacy. Said laser is currently reaching the orbit of the planet, and while its original purpose is unknown, the Sword of Eredohn has repeatedly used this precursor device as nothing more than a symbol of power to frighten members of their nation into obedience. The details on such a device and the nation are still a little hazy, but this nonetheless represents a part of my world-building, which one can freely contact me about! Now, for a small snippet on such a scene...
The gesan commander was frozen in place, his gun gripped loosely as he observed the spectacle before him. What originally had seemed like a mountain at first was in fact an entirely artificial temple, a monument to sheer excess and vainglory. It served no practical purpose, for even as it fired a laser which illuminated the whole of the sky, he could see that such a device could not be aimed, and was without a doubt inefficient to the extreme. Nonetheless, it was a spectacle like no other, with even the impacts of orbital bombardment somehow feeling pale in comparison to this. As the beam continued to fire into the sky, his worn armor momentarily rippled as the incredible amount of energy displaced the air and dust all around. Without realizing it, all of his feathers were also now standing up on end as grandeur of the moment filled him with both awe and terror. How had such a wasteful people ever reached space? How had such inefficient excess achieved something like this? Were they truly that rich, or was their foolishness somehow granting them the luck of a god? Part of him cursed such a thing to have even existed-it was a complete contradiction to everything his kind had stood for, the sacrifices they had committed to the path of progress. Whereas his race had killed and ripped each other apart, before eventually pouring their very beings into brutal efficiency and constant growth amidst a war-torn land, this opposing race had nothing but sheer flare, constant inefficiency, and meaningless displays, from which they had somehow climbed to the same level as the gesan kind. This temple was but the peak of such mockery-the entirety of the Eredohn nation was a joke, one that the Vogelian Supremacy was the victim of. Yet, as the laser continued to fire, the commander finally began to move in response to the wave of heat now washing over him. In his mind, the next objective was now recalled-to gather the remaining crew, and start the assault.
Extra credit to who helped not only design the overall idea of this temple, but has helped edit my writing and world-build as a whole! Not even a drop of this would be here without him, so do check him out if you want to see content in a similar vein!
