Imogene the Book Dragon is looking for spooky story recommendations for the Halloween season. Here are several great authors and their scary books…
1. The Jumbies series by Tracey Baptiste. A group of kids investigate the strange and scary creatures that are taking over their village. Born in Trinidad, author Tracey Baptiste based many of the creatures and stories on Caribbean folklore. The books are full of great characters and scary (but fun) adventures, especially Rise of the Jumbies, which involves cool sea spirits.
2. Through the Woods by Emily Carroll. Oh god. Has anyone else read this? A lot of the short comic stories are available as previews online. Soooo creepy and honestly pretty gory and disturbing. Google image it if you don't believe me...
3. The Good House and The Between by Tananarive Due. I’ve liked this author's work for several years, and while she’s always been critically acclaimed, it’s cool to see her getting mainstream success lately, with some of her books being developed for streaming shows by the legendary Jordan Peele. The Good House and The Between are two of her earlier books that just got reissued. Great characters in eerie supernatural stories.
4. The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. Neil Gaiman is one of my all-time faves. He’s probably best known for books that have already been turned into movies or shows—like Coraline, Sandman, and Good Omens. But The Graveyard Book is an amazing book that for some reason hasn’t had an adaptation yet (even though it won the Newberry award). It’s about a kid whose family is murdered so he gets raised in a cemetery by ghosts and a vampire. You know, classic kids book stuff.
5. Aru Shah and the End of Time by Roshani Chokshi. Okay, this one is not exactly a scary book. It’s a fantasy. But it’s got some cool creatures and magic and a terrifying villain called the Sleeper. So it’s good for this time of year (or any time of year).
THERE! Some scary story recommendations! Imogene the book-hoarding dragon will be busy for the next few weeks.

Oh yes, perfect for reading in dimly-lit treasure keeps!
For reals, this is my favorite time of year for books, movies, and shows. Binging What We Do in the Shadows s3 even as I type this.
