Letters to Liviu the Dark Lion: #1
Translations provided by the Avenger.
Dear Liviu,
As you already know, one of our most famous national heroes is the bloodthirsty Vlad the Impaler, otherwise known as Vlad Tepes, Vlad III, or more infamously, Vlad Dracula. What made him so obsessed with disturbingly graphic violence on his enemies was the fact that when he was taken as a slave by the Ottoman Empire, he watched them kill his father and brother, which pushed him way over the edge. No good medieval European history is ever complete without mentioning Vlad the Impaler. Why? He successfully held Romania off from being conquered by the Ottomans under his rule, thus playing a role in defending Christianity in Europe. Some people today even cosplay as him during Halloween as their way to honor his legacy and his role in saving Europe from the Ottomans.
Eventually the Ottomans managed to behead Vlad and carry his head to Mehmet II as a trophy to confirm they killed him. So what do you think about the fact that despite the methods Vlad the Impaler used on his enemies (not just impaling them since he did other things that are way too graphic to mention), he is seen as a hero for saving Christianity in Europe?

Liviu's reply:
Dear Luminita:
I don't like to talk about Vlad the Impaler because I served under him, and too many things he did are, uh, shall we say, unsuitable for broadcast even by Japanese standards. (Ryo the Samurai Lion preaches too many of his country's films and television programs are so Japanese, it's unbiblical.) In fact, Vlad's marching orders to me were to perform some of the most gruesome executions imaginable to his victims, because he loved violence and wanted everybody to be afraid of it. Discussing it with members of the public such as you in greater detail is a potential violations of the G-52 Code of Conduct, since the Cat of Steel (Super C) does not want us planting scary images in the minds of the public. Lennart the Viking Lion of Sweden is taking too big of a risk as it is writing his autobiography (though Super C doesn't have a problem with that; he's just not going to read the book).
I therefore am not happy seeing people cosplay as him because it just rubs in parts of my dark past, but I am not going to stop them because it is part of our history. All countries have histories full of dark and grim things to make people cry and wish they were never born. And as you have said, it ironically allowed Christanity to continue to thrive, so there was some good that came out of it. All it really proves, however, is how sin has thrived over the world ever since Adam and Eve disobeyed God and ate the forbidden fruit. (Accordingly to the Bible, it was the forbidden fruit, but it wasn't necessarily an apple.)
I hope that helps you; if not, tell me where I goofed and I'll fix it. But I do apologize for being stressed; the CNG crisis has got me all riled up.
Yours truly,
Liviu Negrescu, a.k.a. Liviu the Dark Lion

Chuong: The topic of Vlad the Impaler when visiting Romania is unavoidable so that may be an exception to the Code of Conduct. Talking about Romanian history will include the prince in question too so that can't be avoided.
Slip Shadow: I can see why Romania is among Cripto's least favorite countries but it's that or Romania wouldn't exist today.
Zax: And I've seen busts of Vlad in Romania portraying him as half-human and half-demon so that's obvious of why he was named that way. The Ottomans were a cruel bunch too you know. Oh yeah yeah when talking about Greenland, Eric the Red will be mentioned since it's unavoidable and a part of Greenland's history.
Chuong: Oh yes when talking about Vikings, mentioning their graphic violent nature is also unavoidable. What do you expect from big armored guys with enormous axes? At one point, they nearly burned Paris to the ground after conquering that entire city en masse.
Juno: And Leif Erikson visited America way before Christopher Columbus did and he was pretty violent himself. Then again, the Spanish Empire was pretty violent because how else will they force Catholicism and their ways on others back then? Sorry Leoncio but it is what it is and you were only doing what you were told to do as part of your job.

Super C: I do think I may have to make that an exception, but I appreciate the lions wanting to obey it.
Cripto: Stuff like that gives me nightmares. It's why thoughts of you give me nightmares.
Liviu: Of which we are greatly sorry for that.
Cripto: No need to be sorry; it's not your fault.
Leoncio: Exactly. I got caught up in all the melodrama. I look back at it and sometimes wish it ended differently. But it didn't.
