The fall began with the death of her, the one they named Omega Swiftwing. In the ages before, she had become a champion of her clan, the mightiest weapon at the disposal of the Swiftwings. It was she who led the assaults on the last remnants of the final human strongholds. That was three thousand years ago… sometime after the final conflict, a human who was cut from the cloth of intellect rather than brute force found a way to strike back for the deaths of his people. He created a devastating weapon that would see all of dragon kind wiped from the face of Geokyn, and it nearly succeeded. The Forged Empire was reduced by two thirds of their population. In desperation, they used a technology developed rapidly to avoid their own extinction. They were called Cryo Chambers, and they would freeze those who had not been infected by the engineered virus to slumber through the deaths of their infected brethren so that the species might survive. Of the clans that there were before, only a handful could be saved. The Swiftwing clan lost many of its cousins in that plague. However, unlike many of the other clans who looked down on their non-draconian allies, the Swiftwings had friends aplenty among the wolves of their steppe homelands. With the leaders of the wolves, the aptly named ‘Swift’ Family, guarding their ‘tomb’ as it was called, the Swiftwing clan survived, but one last trick from the humans saw the dragons sleep far longer than they should have. For two thousand years, they were left frozen. Omega was the first to awake, and aided in reviving her people. It was her blade that stopped the Elven civil war. Her wrath laid low the Opulence faction and returned control of the Elven lands to the people, so that they might seek a peace with her own kind. But it was from her own kind that a treacherous blow came.
Of the many clans, the Silktongues were the least of concern to the many clans, when it came to talks about rebuilding the Forged Empire, or Draconian empire, as it was known by many of the other races. True, the Silktongues had been quite capable rulers of the courts and markets, but it had always been the Swiftwings and their mighty warriors who had ruled the military might of the empire. So, it was both shocking and all too obvious, when a Silktongue’s enchanted knife found its mark between Omega’s ribs. As the mighty warrior bled to death, she managed to slay many a Silktongue traitor, but even the greatest warrior cannot last long with a knife in her heart. She died just within sight of her brother, as he retook the Swiftwing throne. The crown fell from his head as he rushed to her side, and it was that omen that should have warned the dragons to beware of the future. The fallen crown went unnoticed, until it was too late. Without their champion, the dragons lost droves of warriors with each challenge that would have been reserved for the black and red Armyslayer. One by one, her siblings fell in glorious combat. Her mother too was struck down by gods of old. And, with the Swiftwing clan broken and shattered, the Forged Empire dissolved into history. Without the Dragons, our planet was helpless, more so than many would like to admit. From that day forward, the mighty beasts grew ever feebler with each generation, until at last, the Kobolds came from that once proud race. Thus, the Kobold species came to be known as the Heirs of Geokyn. Regardless, these fragile and meek beings were no match for the horrors that had once been the task of the most vicious beings to ever set foot on the planet.
Catastrophes went unchecked. The vast oceans dried up. Our skies turned green with toxins and radiation. The elves died in their forests and cities while the other tribes began to turn feral once more, crawling about on all fours as they once had and tearing apart the living for sport and food like the beasts they had once been. Creatures from the deep lumbered onto land and brought devastation to every major city while the Orcs became hulking savages nearly devoid of all intellect. Only the Dwarves survive with relative normalcy, hidden away underground, shunning the surface and all of its inhabitants…
“Meanwhile, clever little bastards like me sneak into ancient laboratories of Omega’s dear, sweet sister, Khan to steal her technological secrets.” The silver kobold said behind his gasmask as he wandered the barren steppe that had once been known as the Segail Heights. “Fuck, you can still hear the fucking bagpipes. What absolute savages. Still, they were centuries ahead of what we have now, if you know who’s place to raid…” He stumbled upon a strange looking device, before reactivating the power to it with some clever looping tricks he had picked up during his life as a tinkerer. As the monitor flared to life, he stared at it. “I fucking knew it would be here. Looks like she finished it before it all went to shit.” He said before looking over at a flattened skeleton of a dragon, female by the shape of the hips. “Well, Khan, Khanny baby! It looks like you managed to crack the secrets of time travel just before someone wrecked your collective shit with a gravity gun. Or spell, magic is fucking weird man.” He said before walking over and picking up her skull. He wiped off the front before giving it a playful kiss through his gasmask. “Brainy babes are fucking hot. Gotta say though, you are the brainiest there was. Can’t wait to meet ya.” He said as he took a large glowing orb from his backpack, only to pry a dead hand from the side. “Fucking, give it up already, damn.” He said before kicking the hand away. He plugged the cables from the portal into the sphere, checked his pack to make sure he had every thing he would need for his mechanical arm, and sighed softly. “Well, lets check out this other timeline where Omega doesn’t bite the dust. Maybe bang a fucking dragoness or five.” He said before taking his firearm from his hip and blasting the sphere a couple of times. “No one else need apply, good-bye you dead end timeline!” He shouted before leaping through the portal.
Thus begins, the tale of Gaius Swift, the last remaining relative of the Swiftwing Clan from a world doomed to rot.
