I am a Chernobyl nut.
I have obsessed over nuclear disasters, Chernobyl specifically, for the better part of a decade-plus now. When I was in high school, Fukushima-Daiichi happened. And around that time, Chernobyl had this aura of "That's the place where the three headed fish and mutants live", because the Boise education system was just top notch! (Fun fact: Idaho was ranked 47th in education in 2011, when I graduated, but in recent years it went to 46th, not because they got better, but because South Dakota got worse, so Idaho failed upwards and is now only 46th in education dab)
Aaaaaanyway, something always attracted me to Chernobyl, I think it was the danger of being near this building could kill you slowly, then I found out the official death toll was something like 33... like a nuclear reactor exploded, and only 30-something people died? Felt fishy, as a high schooler lol. And it kinda just lingered in the back of my mind over the years, and occasionally I'd learn more and more about it, just bits and pieces, like RBMK... a helicopter flew into cables... 30 mile exclusion zone...
The turning point was the HBO Chernobyl miniseries. I've seen it at least 3x now. It just clicked. It was always about hiding the truth. And my obsession was that. I was living that, with my schizophrenic mother, and this disaster just had so many elements that matched my irl existence that I just got attracted to it like a magnet. Since I first saw the series, and all these pieces from my life clicked together, Chernobyl has just been a thing for us lol. We have a small collection of items, including Liquidator medals, that we hope to expand over time. The tricky thing is some items have residual radiation exposure, so importing them is impossible lol. This is a case where fakes may have to suffice!
Over time, I would love to visit Chernobyl, as well as Fukushima and even Semipalatinsk test site in Kyrgyzstan. I just love nuclear power, and studying accidents in particular, and would love to visit some spots irl. There's so much to study and examine, from the wildlife to the effects on the local population, the effects even decades on, all the ethical and moral issues surrounding nuclear power including NIMBYism in the United States and the coming future in fusion energy potentially replacing light or heavy water and other (including the existing RBMKs) reactors, the long term planning regarding nuclear waste and the disposal of such things in sites like Daiichi and Chernobyl... Oh I could go on and on!
With regards to this piece, TK really ought to be wearing the mask. The true danger at this point is inhaling radioactive dust, and even from what seems like a good distance (plus the newly built Sarcophagus), the inherent danger remains particles that have now been broadcast for months now, mostly settled into the environment, so this idiot with his smoldering good looks and sexy pose against... again, Chernobyl (its like he's an Instagram influencer or something...) he could brush his arm, inhale dust that's been facing the formerly open maw of a nuclear reactor for months prior, and tl;dr big sexy manly man TK is crippled with lung and thyroid cancer.
Wear a mask.
Would not have found this had my buddy DonLupercal not gotten it first. Thanks, dude!
Art by misterfyrryman SERIOUSLY THEY MADE THIS YCH IN LIKE AN HOUR IT WAS INSANE HOW FAST IT WAS.
