This is a spontaneous collab my good friend Cravenexx and I tossed together. I did the flavour text and he did all the hard work :P
In case you wonder how not to become a bulge in a shark: stay upright in the water, keep eye contact, keep hands to yourself if possible, calmly retreat if needed.
It has been a fun session snorkeling so far. The guy she had been paired up with was reasonably capable and did not get in the way of her and her photography. A lot of the tourists got too close to the coral or annoyed the animals.
After a few trips between the surface and the reef, she noticed that a lot of the bigger fish had vanished. The eels all stuck to their holes, reef sharks passed quickly, seemingly in a hurry to get somewhere. It was only when she turned around, that she noticed the massive tiger shark approaching her. Luckily she was familiar with the species and knew that they always turned around in the end. It was a kind of test they did with divers too, to determine if the humans -aliens in their watery world- saw themselves as prey or not. So she stood her ground, as the box shaped snout got closer and closer.
By the time she figured out something was horribly wrong, the shark’s jaws were up in her face and in motion. The suction gripped her like thousands of soft, microscopic hands, eagerly pulling her up to her chest into the animal’s gaping maw. As if it knew it was going to get its meal, the shark did not even bother to bite down at all. It only closed its maw around her torso to repeat the gulping motion. The next one sucked her so far that all light was cut out when her head and shoulders were rammed past the beast’s incredibly soft throat entrance. It would be comfy in itself, if there was not that terror surging through her head. She knew where this fleshy tube lead and she had no intentions of going there. She started to wiggle her arms and kick her legs, only achieving to bump into painfully sharp, serrated teeth. As if to taunt her, her mind recollected how easily tigers, like the one eating her, could cut through turtle shells and bone. She had a choice between drowning in a stomach and bleeding out if those teeth caught her legs in the wrong way. Her only chance to escape was her dive buddy now, so she spent most of her remaining air to make another desperate call, sending bubbles past her half engulfed body and out the shark’s gills.
When he turned around to see what that weird noise was, his heart nearly stopped. He was suddenly face to face with a truck sized tiger shark and face to butt with his dive buddy who was already half devoured by the huge predator. His first instinct was to get away from a predator probably 15 times his weight, in its home turf and obviously capable and willing to feed on humans. His second thought was to try and help the woman first, but then he noticed something odd. This whole scene of the shark consuming her whole and alive was…. oddly calm and beautiful.
He ended up watching.
It was mesmerizing to see how the shark’s prey -another human being of all things- entirely stopped resisting as she was pulled deeper. This shark was so sovereign in the domination of its prey, it did not even have to try.
The next swallow pulled the woman past her knees into the shark’s maw. That image of the meter wide maw parting and then closing around the barely moving legs again burned itself into his mind as the man kept staring. All the while the aquatic predator kept swimming in a curved trajectory slightly above him. This gave the snorkeler a priceless view at the noticeable bulge behind the shark’s lower jaw, which then moved swiftly to join the preexisting distension in the massive animal’s midsection. When the -hopefully- satisfied shark passed over him and turned back towards the open sea to digest its easy meal, he could not help but swim closer to it and touch the drooping belly. It was a bit of a strangely privileged experience to touch such a massively superior being and feel the gentle squirming underneath his hands as the shark casually processed its life prey.
For the woman inside the shark, the horror was not over yet. It was scheduled to end when oxygen deprivation would relieve her of the burden of experiencing her conclusive role in the food chain but until then she was on a journey through a tiger shark. Even though this animal was large enough to scoop up and devour her las if she was a light snack, but still the near crushing force of the throat pulling her in was imposing. even after the deadly jaws closed behind her toes, there was no drive in her to struggle for a few seconds. There were muscles larger than her whole body squeezing her and pushing her into the shark’s digestive tract. She might as well have tried to cross the Atlantic in a paper boat.
At least that changed once she was forced into the surprisingly tight stomach. Slimy walls coated in viscous digestive juices welcomed her and were forced to expand in order to accommodate her entire body. She was not alone either. In a heavy sludge of mostly digested fish and some ominous bones from whatever -hopefully aquatic- mammal the shark had eaten last was another living creature. A small, probably young dolphin was still kicking, even if barely. Now that she shared a stomach with it and her ears were dunked into the same thick viscous paste as its melon, she could hear its panicked squeaks quite well. Of course she joined it in its struggles and squirms. It was the only thing left to do besides dying and fueling the predator on its next hunt. Besides, it helped distracting from how viciously fast and efficient the shark’s stomach juices were. It was a mixture of almost pure hydrochloric acid paired with enzymes to accelerate their effects even further.
Despite running out of breath fast, the woman felt their effects greatly before finally passing out. By the time she fell silent, the poor dolphin was still going on, accidentally helping the shark stomach process all its contents.
