Small toy sailboats like this example could be commonly found at boardwalk shops and resorts in the Spontoon Island archipelago from the early 1920s to the 1970s. They were a popular souvenir among children and would usually be painted in bright colors and designed to float. Most early examples were hand made by craftspeople in the villages, but later boats such as this one where imports, hand lettered by the shop keeper with the name of the location of their shop. The boats could range in quality from simple carved blocks of wood with a mast and sail, to the elaborate yachts produced by the Star Yachts company of Birkenhead England. So many of the boats where produced during the postwar era in the 1950s that they where common flotsam that would be found on various beaches, and a game grew where furs would attempt to find boats from the most distant and remote places. It is reported that one boat was even found in Florida!
This particular boat was gifted to Admiral Pacific Dewolfe by his parents when he was four to cheer him up after his family's eventful relocation to the islands in 1950. It has been his most cherished object since then, and has accompanied him during many of his expeditions. Notably, when he was seven, he accidentally left the boat behind during a trip to Moon Island, and found it washed ashore at his home on South Island a week later.
The boat is usually displayed at the North Bay Historic Seaport and Musem, which Pacific operates along with his salvage company.
