The Challenge (Express Yourself 2022 Contest Entry)
Thank you for clicking on my entry submission for the „Express Yourself 2022“ contest. If you are a returning watcher, you may already know that I absolutely adore horns. If you are new, take a listen to my collection of original compositions, almost every of my songs has horns in it.
Now let‘s get personal, shall we?
Two saxophones, a trombone and a Trumpet. No other combination of instruments harmonizes and completes each other so perfectly. Strangely enough I grew up with generally heavy music, thanks to my dad. Music is how we bonded and how we still maintain a close relationship today. Music is the primary reason for almost every aspect of my life.
I eventually broadened my horizon and expanded from Punk music to more traditional music. I discovered Reggae, Ska… and eventually Ska-Punk. I also listened to a lot of classical music too since I always found the aspect of many instruments and musicians coming together so powerful.
When I first got introduced to Streetlight Manifesto, I knew immediately that that‘s what I wanted to do as a musician. The perfect mixture of punk-ish guitars and drums, accompanied by organs and most importantly - the horns, is what electrified my body and mind in a way I can‘t describe with words.
This song, called „The Challenge“, combines my most influential and favorite styles of music: Ska, Punk and Orchestra. The primary pop-horn quartet is accompanied by a very small violin section, two tubas and a concert trombone, while a guitar and the organ provide the final layer (and in section two, the rhythmical backbeat). I originally also wanted to include a more upbeat bassline, but due to the sheer complexity of this piece that would be too overwhelming.
I named this piece „The Challenge“ because life has given me so many challenges. I‘ve been trough a lot, however it shaped me into the person that I am today. The horns are my way of portraying these feelings. I wanted to make the melody of the quartet sound mighty, as if battling yet another challenge, but also portray victory and growth.
If you read up until here, I appreciate your time very much. Thank you for reading. Hopefully I could maybe even convince you to listen to my other songs!
Thank you for listening.
(PS: English isn‘t my native language as I’m from Germany, so I apologize for grammatical errors or spelling mistakes.)

This is dope AF! Awesome mix and sound, the composition is very entretaining and sounds awesome. This is a solid contester for the contest, as the mix of the instruments and the orchesta gave an awesome result. The vibe is energetic and entretaining, while keeping tension enough to be resolving and dynamic. Good luck to us all on the contest!
Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment! Happy to hear that you enjoyed my entry, especially with your experience. :) I did work quite hard on this piece, mostly thinking of how I could combine all of the instruments with each other while preserving the core of my influences. I think I found the best possible solution on how to express myself in a rather unique style :)
