I Can't Change (FA Musicians Express Yourself 2022 Entry ...
Here's my second entry for the contest, and has lyrics. It's a song about standing your ground and not letting other people mould you into their image. I've been listening to a lot of Gregg Alexander recently and I think that comes across in the composition.
Lyrics:
I'll never be normal, so cut me some slack
If I need advice, don't stab me in the back
I'm so far away from what I ought to be
That nobody seems to know the real me
I'm tired of trying to explain to you
That I don't think the same way as you
And I'll never do the things you do to me
Cause I can't change yeah
What you see is what you get
And don't you walk away
Cause we ain't finished yet
No use complainin' cause I ain't listenin'
My best is yet to come and you don't know where to begin

Seems like something out of a 00's movie about an indie band trying to win a contest :D in a good way. I feel that is also something you were going to with the lyrics too. The only constructive critisism i would give is that when adding 2 voices, try to make one quieter than the other so it doesn't sound robotic. Apart from that, this is very cool and i liked your entry a lot :) Good luck to us all in the contest :)
Thanks,
I guess you could have it in the context of an underdog film like that. It can be frustrating when people don't see how hard you've been trying and instead focus on what is not perfect. That goes for parents, employers, record industry, relationships etc. It leads to what we see a lot of today, people who claim to be 'nothing special' when they're actually pretty awesome, just because they're surrounded by people who don't appreciate them.
The chorus double tracking normally turns out a little better than it did here. I mixed the chorus synth lower than I could have too. But I'm probably going to go back to this when I work on the new album when those things will be addressed. In quite a lot of my songs I use other people on backing vocals which adds some harmonic balance.

People are so used to hearing hyper-produced music on the radio that anything that sounds below that is amateur kid playing with a keyboard. Even tho the difference in budget can be over $10.000
Yeah, people are so conditioned to hearing overproduced music nowadays that when they hear something with old-school dynamics they mistake it for being lo-fi. But that's primarily because they listen to it on their phones and they only go up to a certain volume. My model for this sort of song is the demos Gregg Alexander created in Protools in the 90s and early 2000s, so he kept the arrangements fairly simple and generally didn't use too many effects.
Yes, with the exception of experimental music, a song with a strong melody and simpler production is always going to be more memorable than one with a weak melody and overblown production. Hence why say, Stock Aitken Waterman's music went out of fashion pretty quickly. They had the budget, but the songs all sounded the same.
