Surf N Turf [Surf Rock/Hard Rock]
Surf music is one of those genres that I really like yet can't explain why I do. So I wrote this, blending it with some hard rock as an experiment. It went though a couple of changes over the past 4 days I worked on this and ended up removing the super twangy, heavily reverbed guitar that used to exist in the original concept I had. Decided to include a whammy pedal section as well since that's fun to play around with. There's probably still some tiny remnant of surf rock left in that super condensed 1 minute...somewhere.
I consider myself a rhythm guitarist so playing lead guitar is hard. Probably did about 50 takes on that solo, since I did the not-so-smart thing and immediately tried to record a solo minutes after writing it.
All in all, it was a fun track to work on. Slightly abrupt transitions but I wanted to get into the meat of the track with that meaty guitar solo and overdubbed guitars, hence the name of the track.

Thanks! Maybe in the future I might expand on this if I can find a use for it.
i like the guitar riff, particularly at the end. Thank you for sharing
Really nice! I've always been a fan of surf guitar as well, mostly via Dick Dale. Good job! :)
Dick Dale is great. Absolutely love his guitar tone and is also responsible for my surf obsession. Thanks!
You gave me hard position to measure myself xD. I really like that piece. When I listen to that song I somehow get images of Austin Powers in my head. Those sequences where they were dancing and the swirly camera movements xD. Anyway. Top notch quality. Mastering is something I still have to master xD
Cheesy spy movie intros and surf guitar does pair quite well :P
Mastering is really hard. There's only very minimal amount of it done on this track. But I do pay alot of attention to the mixing and getting the EQ/reverb/compression right. That makes a huge difference especially with the 2nd half of this track.

I use beyerdynamics DT880 Pro for mastering and just in direct comparison to your tracks mine sounds muffled. The high frequencies got lost. To be honest on the headphones the mix sounds good but I read a lot that they emphasize high frequencies. Maybe that's the reason. Your mix sounds a bit hissy on the DTs... But great on any speaker I used. I guess I have to adapt to the headphones characteristics when mastering
My track was mixed mostly on a cheaper pair of headphones (AKG K99), though i do use a pair of Mackie CR3 studio monitors as reference to double check that the mix sounds balanced, since I don't trust the frequencies on my headphones to be completely flat. But yeah, having a secondary reference for mixing really helps I feel. Especially if your current headphones have a boosted high-end.
That song went from good, to great, to freaking amazing fast! Love to hear more
This is solid! The tones of the guitars and bass is very good sounding, the progression and drums is not al all boring and the mixture of that surf and hard rock makes it kinda 80s metal with a modern tone. Awesome work! Good luck to us all in the contest :)
Thank you. Mixing all the guitars was tricky, but it was fun to mess around with a guitar solo and the whammy pedal.
Good luck to you as well. I had a quick look at your prog track and your production work is stellar.
