So like I mentioned there was a lot of hemlock snags (dead trees that are standing) in this stand. Especially down by the streams and drainage, particularly on the north facing slopes. Mostly Sweet/Black Birch growing into the light gaps. Although it is sad that we are currently loosing all of our Eastern Hemlock species, their bodies aren't going to waste. A wide range of fungi and bacteria will break down the tree, emitting most of it as various gases, and returning a small amount of it to the local soil nutrient cycle.
Just a PSA, snags in general are dangerous to be around. Trees become brittle when they die, and the organisms breaking them down, also break the structural integrity. Pieces of a snag can come off without warning, and have killed and maimed people.
Toned this one, copper.
