Chapter 5 of Edison Corp. Based on Kiaun 's Derideal lore.
The reflections continue as Hurst and Emily get to know each other.
The two lop eared rabbits came upon a small coffee shop on an unassuming and quiet street, no larger than an old city rowhome. They took a couple seats by the clear window as vehicles quietly drove down the one-way street on a clear day. Calm Lo-fi music rang through the café as someone served the two coffee and biscuits as ordered. The soothing scent of cinnamon and coffee perforated the warm room. "Well, I hope this place is to your liking." The female rabbit said to Hurst. "It's nice and quiet. I don't mind it at all." Hurst responded. "Ah, you must forgive me, I'm not used to talking to people that much, well, more than a couple of sentences really. Where are my manners?" He added after taking a sip of coffee. "My name is Hurst." He then gave the thought of what his occupation for a moment, then decided it was better not to mention it around any prying ears. "Well, I suppose I don't need much of an introduction." He spoke. The female rabbit nodded in understanding. "I suppose that's fair; my name is Emily; I work as an engineer at my dad's old shop." Emily then gave her side of the story some thought. "Well, self-employed anymore sadly. I was just getting back to the shop to finish up something when those goons got involved. Once again, thank you for...assisting in such a sensitive matter." She added. "Don't mention it." Hurst said, acting shy on the conversation.
"So, what brings you into town?" Emily asked. "Well, to be honest, I was just passing by." Hurst answered. "So, if you don't mind me asking, how goes the shop?" He asked. Emily's face looked distraught. "Well, finding the right parts is hard to come by anymore. I can only do so much with what scraps I can get, but it's been difficult to say the least." Emily spoke as she took a bite out of a biscuit. "So, where are you heading to? You said you were passing by." Emily asked. Hurst was unsure how to answer that question, looking around. "Well, on that I'm not sure, never was one for sticking around." He answered. "Huh, I see, so you're just traveling around like some sort of...adventure?" Emily asked. "Well, something like that I suppose." He replied after drinking more of the coffee. The two discussed other topics such as current events and the like till the sun was setting.
"Well, it's getting dark, I should try to find an inn." Hurst said to Emily as they head out of the coffee shop. Emily was not accepting that as an answer. "Perhaps you could stay at my place, well, I mean the shop of course. It's not much, but it’s better than paying for a small room at an inn." She replied to Hurst. "Are you sure? I don't want to impede on you too much." He asked to which Emily nodded in confirmation. "Well, if you insist. Lead the way." Hurst said, following Emily to her workshop. It was night time when they finally arrived at the old workshop. It was dark and cold inside as Emily swatted at the wall blindly for the light switch. Hurst summoned a ball of light from his hands to help her find the panel. "Ah, thanks for the...wait, how do you...right, I forgot." Emily asked as she found the switch with ease and turned on the lights in the shop. Inside it seemed like it seen better days as machines in the shop looked run down and worn. Parts and scraps can be seen littered about on the shop floor. Some machines have sticky notes as reminders of what needs to be done and what was repaired. Despite the mess, there seemed to be an order amongst the chaos. "That magic stuff you do, It's interesting. Must come in handy for you, huh Hurst?"
Hurst looked downward left in thought on that statement. "Yeah, it has gotten me out of some situations, just as much as it got me in them as well." He responded. "Usually people are fearful of me, they don't understand it." He added. "So...do you want to talk about it?" Emily asked out of concern. There was a worn sofa and a small tv at the other side of the room that Emily walked to take a seat. She patted the other seat to signal to Hurst to take a seat as well. "Sure, thank you." Hurst said. He placed his belongings to the side of the sofa as Emily turned on the tv, showing local commercials and budget show re-runs in low volume. "It must be a lonely life." Emily asked calmly. "Yeah, I usually try to keep a brave face, but it isn't easy." Hurst responded, looking down. "When people do see what can do...the faces they have on them, both fear and scorn. I mean people no harm, but I heard the stories, how people like us can cause terrible atrocities and bring about natural disasters. I can't blame them for thinking that way, but the things they say about us, they hurt." He said while sheading a few tears. "I can't describe the times I had to run." He added. "Well, there must be some place that you could call home, right? Emily asked.
"Well, there was this place, a castle like structure, maybe a fortress even. It was known as the High Towers to us, where psykers like me are taken to live there within its walls, safe from outsiders and vice versa." Hurst said. "Does it exist?" Emily asked, wondering if it was some elusive rumor. Hurst looked back and nodded. "Yes, unfortunately it does. I've lived there for a long time, sheltered completely from the outside world, never knowing what's going on outside its walls. It had its moments, they taught me how to have control over my abilities and the various disciplines, but I've always felt something was off about them, like they were using us." Hurst answered plainly. "Well, what gives you that impression?" Emily asked. "I wish I had an answer, but I don't know. What I do know is if the rumors are to be believed, they would hire a hunter to track us down, to take us back. They are dangerous folk from what I understand. I hope not to run into one." Hurst said with a sense of fear. "That's why I have to keep moving Emily." Hurst added, Emily placed her hand by his side to comfort him. "Don't worry, you're here with me. It's just for the day after all." She said to assure Hurst he was safe. Hurst went asleep on the sofa and Emily retreated to her bed.
The next day rolls in, there could be a loud knocking on the door to the workshop. "Who could possibly be knocking on my door?" Emily said, aggravated that her sleep was cut short by the knocking. She opened the door to a well geared canine like individual, wearing armor and appearing seasoned with the manners to boot. "The workshop is closed, come back later." Emily said to the individual. "Ah, my apologies, I didn't mean to be rude, but there was an incident recently involving a rather interesting individual. Witnesses said you were there when it happened?" The gentleman spoke. "I'm sorry? Yes, something like that did happen, you must be?" Emily asked. "Ah, we're the town guard, we were wondering if you know anything that might help us in the investigation. Perhaps possible whereabouts of this individual." The individual then had a tablet off the CCTV footage of the fight from yesterday, they then pointed to Hurst as the footage showed him levitating the ruffian boss. "Oh, that guy. I thought you meant..." Emily said, then she thought about her words carefully. After all, he looked a little too well dressed for town guardsman. "I already asked around town, the folks at the coffee shop said you were the last to see him, you wouldn't happen to know where he went?" The individual asked as he peaked behind Emily. Emily had to think fast, then it came to her. "Ah, right, in fact I do, he said he was just passing by, I believe he headed down the road." Emily lied, but the individual had his suspicions. "Hmm, that's weird, the guar... I mean, my collogues didn't report any such individuals heading out that gate." He said while giving a glare. Emily however was able to hold a firm poker face. "Well, it was in the middle of the night, I bid him farewell and he went about his way." She replied. The individual had his suspicions, but with nothing else to go on, the reasoning was sound enough for him. "Hmm, it does sound like something he would do. Very well, thank you for your time." The individual said, with a sense of annoyance. "No problem, don't mention it." Emily replied.
She closed the door and looked out to see the individual leave down the road. "That was a hunter." Hurst whispered quietly to Emily from behind the sofa. "I had a feeling it was such, no guard I've seen looks anything like that guy." Emily replied quietly, in the off chance he might come back. "You were there for me when it mattered. Thank you, Emily." Hurst said as he reappeared, mimicking the form of a remote for the tv. "Well, if these hunters are half as persistent as you claim them to be, he'll be back. We need to leave." Emily said as she rushes to her room to pack some things. "They're after me Emily, they won't bother you if I head out." Hurst said as he brought his hand out, his staff rushing to his hand as if by command. "Don't be silly Hurst, we are in this together now. Besides, I think it would be fun." Emily said in the other room. "Are you sure about this?" Hurst asked. "Yeah, would be nice to travel around and see the sights. I have a car in the garage, it's a Junker and on its last legs, but it'll get us out of town, perhaps into the next town if we're lucky." Emily said as she entered the room again, this time with her belongings and well equipped with gear of her own. "I saw you struggle with the remote for the tv. Something tells me you don't know much about technology." Emily said with a chuckle as Hurst starred at the tv remote with bitter distain. "Right, the sooner the better, time for a road trip!"
The memory then starts to fade away bring Hurst back to present time, with the two standing around the fabricator as Emily marveled at the possibilities. "If I had something like this at the shop...It would really help out my home town." Emily spoke to Hurst. "Imagine not having to seek out scraps and parts when they could be fabricated on the spot. I mean why stop there, we could just make new parts and new things that run nicely?" She added, with Hurst nodding in approval. "So, do you know how to use that thing?" He asked. "You know me, I can figure these things out easily." She replied. They then heard footsteps from a distance. "Ah, is that Stardust coming this way? Took his sweet time I take it." Emily asked. "Or is that Riddly with him?" She added. "Is that Stardust? I thought his footsteps would be...lighter." Hurst asked, unaware of what, or who was coming their way.
