Chapter 9: The Andrenyi and Detective Gideon Hardman.
Judy Poirot found herself in front of the door of compartment 12, that of the Countess Andrenyi where she is currently with her husband. Nicholas Bouc, standing next to her, tried to convince her to leave the Andrenyi in peace.
Nicholas Bouc: Judy, I think we should leave Count and Countess Andrenyi alone. They are diplomats and if we involve them in the case, we risk having unfortunate consequences.
Judy Poirot: It's true Nicholas, but I have to interview all suspects without exception and furthermore, if they are innocent then why are they refusing to talk?
Judy knocks on the door and a gray rabbit with black stripes on the back of her head in a navy suit opens the door and answers with a stern attitude.
Rabbit: If you came to interrogate us, you're wasting your time. I can guarantee you that we slept through the night.
Judy Poirot: Monsieur le Comte I know that you and your wife are diplomats, but unfortunately I have to ask you other questions to ask you.
Rabbit: Listening my wife is ill and I don't want her to be disturbed in any way.
Suddenly the voice of the Countess is heard inside the Compartment.
Arctic Vixen: Let them in Jack, the questions they're going to ask me won't kill me.
Finally Count Jack Andrenyi lets the rabbit and the fox in.
Judy Poirot: Thank you for letting us receive you, Madame la Comtesse. Tell me your surname, first name and your maiden name because on your passport there is a grease stain that prevents you from reading your maiden name.
The Arctic Vixen: Skye Andrenyi-Goldenstein.
Judy Poirot: Did you notice or hear anything last night?
Countess Skye Andrenyi: No because every time I travel by train I always take barbital because the rattling of the train keeps me up all night.
Judy Poirot: You take barbital. Has anyone borrowed any from you? How many bottles do you have.
Countess Skye Andrenyi: I have two bottles and they're both here (Pointing to her bedside table) and no one has borrowed any from me otherwise.
Judy Poirot: Have you ever been to the United States?
Countess Skye Andrenyi: No miss.
Count Jack Andrenyi: I lived there a year before we got married.
Judy Poirot: And did you know an Armstrong family, Count?
Count Jack Andrenyi: I must have known 2 or 3 Armstrongs, but I don't know if I knew the ones you are referring to, miss. You see I meet a lot of people.
Judy Poirot: Madame la comtesse I have one last question for you, what color is your dressing gown?
Countess Skye Andrenyi: She's in corn-colored chiffon.
Judy Poirot: Thank you.
Judy and Nicholas head for the door, then Judy pauses for a moment.
Judy Poirot: I almost forgot, do you smoke, Count?
Count Jack Andrenyi: No I don't smoke miss.
Judy turned and walked out of the compartment, joining Nicholas.
Judy Poirot: The Countess seems like she can't hurt a fly and the Count is kind of protective of his wife. Now let's go and question Mr. Hardman.
Judy and Nicholas go to the compartment at compartment 16 of the Zootropolis car.
Judy knocked on the door.
Judy Poirot: Mr. Hardman.
Mr. Hardman responds with a southern accent "Enter".
Judy and Nicholas entered the fox's compartment.
Judy Poirot: Mr. Hardman we have some questions for you about what happened that night.
The fox who was dressed in a dark blue suit with a light blue tie, was sitting on the couch while he was putting an item in his pocket replied, "That's what I expected."
Judy Poirot: Can you give me your first and last name your profession.
The Fox: Hardman, Gideon. Betz Hardman I'm a typewriter ribbon salesman.
Judy Poirot: And where are you from?
Gideon Hardman: I come from the North.
Judy Poirot: And have you ever been down south Mr. Harman.
Gideon Hardman: Never miss.
Judy Poirot: You answered with a southern accent though.
Seeing that the ribbon seller betrayed himself, he decided to confess.
Gideon Hardman: Nothing escapes you, Miss Poirot.
Judy Poirot: I'm also going to have to ask you to empty your pockets.
The fox complied and took out a revolver from his right pocket and a small card from his left pocket.
Gideon Hardman: This job of selling typewriter ribbons is just a cover. I'm actually a Pigerton detective.
Judy took the card and recognized the Pigerton agency logo.
Judy Poirot: I see you have a card from the agency you work for, but why did you need a weapon, what is the purpose of your trip on this train.
Gideon Hardman: Mr. Doug hired me to watch his back because he informed me that he had received threatening letters. Besides, I saw you with him on the quay of Tropical-city, I think he tried to hire you too, but you refused.
Judy Poirot: It's true that I refused his offer, because he had an unpleasant character. And you, what did you think of Mr. Doug Mister Hardman?
Gideon Harrdman: I agree with you, Miss Poirot, he had a nasty guy.
Judy Poirot: Have you heard of the Armstrong case?
Gideon Hardman: Yeah, I've heard of it, imagine I've been a police officer and was one of those investigating. But I stopped my police career, you see I always arrested the real culprits. But I was ordered to arrest a sheep that was the servant of the Armstrong family.
Judy Poirot: And why was she arrested?
Gideon Hardman: She was charged with aiding and abetting the kidnapping of the little girl, all the cases were against her. After her suicide, it was later discovered that she was innocent.
Gideon began to feel sad.
When I learned that I felt responsible for his death, I therefore left the police and went to the Pigerton agency. But what does that have to do with Mr. Doug's murder.
Judy Poirot: Doug was actually Casseti the kidnapper.
Gideon Hardman: Now I understand why they were getting those letters, apparently someone knew who he was.
Judy Poirot: Where were you last night Mr. Hardman?
Gideon Hardman: After dinner, Mr. Manchas invited me to play cards and it seemed like an opportunity to get to know him a bit so I accepted, we played there until 10 p.m. After the game, I went to bed because before Mr. Manchas started the game, I asked Mr. Michel to prepare my bed and Mr. Manchas asked to make his after the game.
Judy Poirot: And did you meet anyone in the hallway?
Gideon Hardman: When I went to bed there was nobody but, I was barely in my bed, when I heard a noise and saw this buffalo, Colonel Bogo back in his compartment which is next to mine.
Judy Poirot: And didn't you see anything else?
Gideon Hardman: No I'm a light sleeper and if I had heard any noise in the hallway then I would have known but I didn't.
Judy Poirot: And do you smoke Mr. Hardman?
Gideon Hardman: No miss, I'm a health conscious person.
Judy Poirot: That'll be all Mr. Hardman, but before I leave I'm going to have to ask you to give me your weapon.
The fox gave his gun to the detective without question. Judy and Nicholas exit the compartment leaving the detective alone. But before leaving Judy stopped and took the pin out of her pocket, showing it to Mrs. Hardman.
Judy Poirot: Ah I forgot you must have lost your tie pin.
Gideon Hardman: Sorry Miss but that pin is not mine, by the way I stopped wearing it because every time I put it on it kept stinging my chest.
Judy Poirot: Good Mr. Hardman.
Judy got out of the compartment and closed the door.
Nicholas Bouc: Well we can conclude that Mr. Hardman's alibi perfectly matches the one that Mr. Manchas told us.
Judy Poirot: And now there are only two passengers left to be interviewed, Mademoiselle Gazelle and Colonel Bogo. It's two, we seem very close, and I have the impression that they are hiding something from us.
