It was a curious little antiques store that caught the witch's interest that afternoon. Even more curious was the fact that Jenny hadn't seen the store in any of her previous outings to the area – and any good witch is always on the lookout for a new antiques store. The dusty looking building was cramped between two taller buildings, almost innocuous hidden in the shade of a grocers and accountant's, its glass windows were old and worn looking and the items behind them, more so. Those on display were the typical antiques fare – faded vases and old music boxes. Enough to bring in the tourists, but behind them Jenny saw something else pick up what little light struggled between the crowded street buildings. A large red stone glittered from where it was set in a diamond shaped amulet, drawing the chubby witch in through the antique's store doors.
Inside it was cool, the smell of dust and books was stronger. It was a special kind of paradise to those who could appreciate it. A blonde furred vulpine waved at Jenny lazily from behind a counter where she appeared to be absorbed in a book. This suited the mouse fine, she was getting a better look at the amulet. The red stone in the middle wasn't a ruby, but wasn't quite not a ruby, either. It almost glowed from within, like embers in a fireplace. Jenny didn't have to be a witch to guess the item was magical in nature, but she was surprised to see such a large jewel to be reasonably priced. She reached out to carefully pick the amulet up but a jolt of static bit her outstretched fingers, eliciting a startled yelp. Her fingers felt almost burned.
“Well now you'll have to buy it.” The fox woman marked her page and closed her book.
Jenny quirked an eyebrow, “I only meant to get a closer look.” She had every intention of buying it, but didn’t care to be pressed on it.
The fox behind the counter didn’t challenge her, instead she shrugged. “Sometimes you choose the jewelry, sometimes the jewelry chooses you. You’ll buy it sooner or later. Might as well get it out of the way now.”
Reaching out again, Jenny gingerly picked the amulet up again this time managing to avoid any static burn. Her fingers still ached from the last time. The fox was right - she would buy the amulet. It was cheap and the embers within indicated some kind of latent magical power. Better still, it was gorgeous and with such a weak magical aura it might be a nice piece to wear around, if a bit gaudy.
“I’m Endra, by the way.” The vulpine behind the counter said, as Jenny approached. Getting closer the witch could sense something magical about the other vulpine, a gentle yet intense aura of power surrounding her. It figured - the best antiques stores were owned by those who could sense the potential in the items they peddled, after all.
“Jenny.” She replied, smiling as the pair completed the transaction. She would have to scope out the rest of the store another day - with the burning sensation still in her fingers, Jenny was eager to get home and study her new prize a little more closely. And perhaps given its weak magical aura, wear it on the way home.
