dunno about everywhere else, but this is actually a super common thing they do for kids at various asian restaurants in America. I would always poke fun at my older sister in her teens when i had mastered chopsticks and she still needed to use this.

Or use knives and forks like I've seen people use in Hong Kong, China and Japan first hand :P
When I've been out there, I thing I hardly ever saw anyone use chopsticks.
(Although I can use them quite proficiently myself! Hehe)

Before I knew how to use chopsticks, a lot of places had a plastic thing you could put on the chopsticks that did essentially the same thing. Me and my family would call them "cheaters". x3

I have had so many friends that I did the same thing with. They could not use chop sticks to save there life. Some still managed to have trouble after I did that. XD

at a certain point of chopstick deficiency at a date it is better to eat in a more traditional method.

you know, once you get it down in how to use them, its actualy fun, anytime i go to someplace that has chop sticks i get them instead of a fork, but still take the spoon lol.
