I've been asked over and over again about where does the Regresaga idea came from. I'm a little tired of explaining it over and over again via notes and PM, so I made this submission as a general answer i could just link people to.
Back in the day (the PSX era of Gaming), there were lots of Rumors about this new cool game everyone was talking about, Final Fantasy VII. Keeping Aerith alive, Recruiting the Shinra guys to your party, Getting Aerith ultimate weapon before her death, the mysterious satanic chanting on the brothel... magazines and people were on fire, discussing these. Well. one of those was the "Baby cloud scene". It was a very popular rumor here in Argentina, but i've talkied with some people from Spain, Mexico, Peru and Chile mentioning it, or talking about it in spanish podcast and old school videogame rumors and urban legends back in the 2006-2012 youtube era (mostly Loquendo voiced videos. Those were the good old youtube days). It was asumed that (and i may be wrong here. Feel free to correct me if i'm wrong) the reason it wasn't as popular between the EnglishSpeaking fandom was because (aparently) it was another case of "Censorship/cut content", lost during the game localization. But that was half truth. The youtuber Nimbus Terrafaux made a long video comparing the code of the european spanish version, the english USA version, the original Japanese version and the FF7 japaneese beta, and found that the "English versions" and later releases in every languaje doesn't have the scene, while the original Japanese game (the first releases) and the spanish languaje versions (that were translated directly from the japanese version and didn't get any of the american localization changes) does have the disk data that trigger this scene. When Squaresoft noticed the first releases of the game had some bugs, caused mostly by unused assets and scripts on disk, they decided to re-release the game on Japan and all the world with those bugs fixed, and all that unused content removed from the disks. Something that didn't afected us here in LatinAmerica, because most people played pirated games that were copied from the original spanish release, not the re-releases (same reason why here in latinamerica a lots of us got to play the uncensored psx Spiderman 1 game and games like "thrill kill"). Also, that's the reason why we got platinum label FF7 disks so early on release in all stores, they where covering up for the old buggy ones with the old unused content, but i digress.
Anyway. Back in the day the rumor said you had to do some hardcore things to get this scene (typical 90's videogame rumor thing. XD):
-You have to keep Cloud and Aerith under level12.
-You can't use any materia with either of them.
-Neither of them can have died once or "had any status effect in your save file" (this is plain imposible if you ask me).
-And you have to have all limit breaks unlocked for both of them up to level 3 (another ridiculous requeriment).
They said that, if you managed to do all that, during the date with Aerith, when you go up to the dragon, it'll give you the option to "pat the dragon on the head". Then the dragon turns Cloud into a baby. Then some versions say it triggered a Game Over screen, while others said you could actually play with baby Cloud for the rest of the game (ludicrous, i know, but it was the 90's... there were people saying you could make nudalities in Mortal Kombat, and use michael jackson in NBA Jam. So, it was just another of those).
The thing is: It was not a HOAX!, The scene DID exist. The rumor came from people that actually triggered the scene back in the day (because of the same bugs these original spanish versions had), but the requeriments where never found. Is posible those people triggered it by random bugs while playing the game, then talked about it with other people and the snowball kept rolling till appearing in magazines and youtube videos later on.
This doesn't mean is imposible to acces the scene. It's actually super easy, if you happen to have an old PSX (the big grey one), an original (or pirated) Euripean spanish version of FF7 (first release, not the platinum label one) and use GameShark to activate the "unlimited item slots" and "level 1 cap for Barreth" just before the Golden Saucer date. If you do, it will trigger the scene and the forth "Acariciar malvado Rey Dragón" (Pet the dragon) option should appear during the theather play scene.
Sadly, triggering the scene results in crashing the game. But having a baby cloud model in the disk does make us wonder "what were they planing to do with this thing?". It was an easter egg? a developers joke they forget to erase before release? no idea. but is fun to theorize about.
I've put some screenshots and translations for you on the submission, for any non spanish speakers.
Hope this answer the "where does the Regressaga idea came from?" to everyone. ^_^
