Summer, 1331
Liza stopped to catch her breath. “We’re almost there. The canal uses the creek for a bit, before crossing the canyon to the other side with a big brick aqueduct.” She pointed to an absolutely massive two-level multi-span arch bridge in the distance.
“We cross that. After that the waterway goes into isolated wooded hills that no one uses except bandits-kinda like the Doldrums. We’ll be able to disappear until the Rapidan River, far behind the Tassurian lines. And then Karlen should be able to lead us into the mountains.”
The duregaren nodded. “If we reach the river, I should be able to figure out the best route to Almaden.”
Glib looked around. “This is Niles Canyon. A secondary pass to Anisa. Popular smuggler’s route, so that’s the cursed Weeping Infant Bridge of La Llorona.”
Karlen grunted. “Of course it’s cursed.”
"The bridge- or technically aqueduct-arches ninety feet over Alameda Creek.” Glib explained like a guide as they all continued along. “At one time far in the past this water channel served the ancient city of Anisa before being destroyed in some massive storm centuries later, leaving only this abandoned monument to human ingenuity."
“Why is it called the Weeping Infant Bridge?” Lord de Trobliand asked.
“Crazy lady tossed her crying baby into the waters of the aqueduct and then regretted it and jumped off the bridge herself and now wanders the bridge searching for her baby.” Glib scratched his head. “Forget why she chucked the baby. Something about being abandoned by a nobleman and going mad over it.”
Lord de Trobliand suddenly lost interest in the story.
“What’s the curse?” Logan cut in.
“If we cross the bridge, things will initially go according to plan, but nevertheless fall apart eventually. Or something like that.”
The Forester snorted. “Eh that’s life, not much of a curse.”
“Also the ghost of that horse-headed lady will kill us all. Did I mention that part?”
Logan looked over the members of his party. “We have two nonhumans, a doctor dressed in a bird suit, a noble with a horrible death machine, an alchemist with charms and talismans and heavens knows what else, and a literal dragon. I think we can deal with a ghostly horse-lady.”
Glib shrugged. “Fair enough. Perhaps La Llorona should fear us.”
The party continued on.

They were about halfway across the ridgeline to the aqueduct when Sufjan suddenly turned her head to the West. She immediately crouched low in the bushes, and the rest of the group followed suit. Mera tried to do his best, but nevertheless still appeared like a large suspicious lump.
“There are troops coming!” Sufjan whispered furiously.
Soon enough a light appeared in the distance and gradually grew larger and larger, eventually resolving into hundreds, if not thousands of torches. A column of Other Man infantry marched in lockstep formation. Niles Canyon was a secondary pass to the Northlands, but even that had not escaped the onslaught of war. Tassurian reinforcements were pouring into the Southlands from every road, and the canyon was soon filled with troops.
Karlen dryly looked over the rest of the party. He said nothing, but his eyes said, ‘Well, we’re fucked.’
Liza quickly pointed to a rough area a dozen feet or so away with a series of large boulders and ancient stone ruins and ran over to it. After a brief pause, the others followed, the dragon taking the rear and surprisingly smoothly winding his way over like a snake. There were some important structures here a long time ago- all now ruined- perhaps at the time the aqueduct had been abandoned, perhaps even before that. Regardless these were bones long before the current crop of ruins from this war were made, and age had rounded off the edges, making them appear little different from the natural geological formations scattered alongside them. Logan’s party and the dragon did their best to hide behind this city of natural and artificial rocks.
Soon enough the column of enemy troops marched past, seemingly ignoring the dull dark figures in the rough hills around the canyon. There were many such ruins and terrain on the long road South, and speed was of the essence to them. Logan and the others tried to be completely motionless.
As the column left, the party breathed a sigh of relief.
“Well glad that’s over.” Glib stated.
Sufjan shook her head and pointed at more lights approaching quickly from the distance. There would not be a pause.
Logan drew his awlpike from his back. “We move.”
Carefully keeping out of sight of the Niles Canyon road, working their way behind the boulders and ruins, Logan’s party continued up the canal as more enemies approached from below. Finally, ahead of them stood the massive crumbling ruins of the ancient Ardean aqueduct, standing like the mountrous skeleton of some long-dead behemoth. Unlike the creek bed and the ruin-filled hillside above it, the aqueduct was dangerously exposed, visible from the other side of the creek and easily spotted from the air.
And now there was a flood of enemy soldiers marching below it.
Do we have to cross now? Dr. Moller quickly scribbled upon her notepad.
Liza nodded and pointed at the moon slowly rising higher into the sky. Time was not on their side.
Logan nodded back. They had to attempt it now.
He turned to the ropemaker.
“Give us all the luck that you have Glib.” The Forester whispered.
Glib wagged his head as well, grabbing a half dozen charms from his necklace and rubbing them.
With that, after a momentary hesitation Sufjan, Logan, Lord de Trobliand, Dr. Moller, Glib, Liza and Karlen went up to the towering brick arches and carefully began working their way across. From atop the crumbling ruins, Logan looked down at the soldiers below. He held his breath at the sight: a sea of enemies, disciplined and armed to the teeth. Could Auxia ever withstand all that?
A couple of pebbles tumbling down the hill caused the Forester to immediately pull his awlpike and swing it at the source of the sound. Glib pulled out his kami, Liza drew her gladius, Karlen raised his hammer, Dr. Moller readied her sickles, Lord de Trobliand readied his repeater, and Sufjan notched her bow. Mera appeared somewhat sheepishly to face the assortment of weapons aimed at him. The dragon had nevertheless impressively moved over the canal, around the ancient ruins and boulders and up the hill with minimal noise. After an awkward pause, Sufjan looked down at the Tassurians below to see if the alarm had been raised. Seeing no indication of detection, she nodded and continued. With a sigh of relief, Logan lowered his weapon and smiled, gesturing to the dragon to keep up, to which Mera responded with a curse under his breath.
Walking as fast as possible without disturbing any more pebbles, Logan’s party steadfastly crossed the top of the aqueduct. Sufjan gracefully led the way, almost dancing in the way she worked her way across the bridge. With her camouflaging cloak and speed, the Sabine seemed almost invisible. Logan had a much harder time, making sure to keep an eye on where his feet were landing upon the crumbling brick surface and not shifting his weight until he was sure he had a firm footing. Ninety feet below he could vaguely see the glint of the nanigatas of the Other Men shining in the torches they were holding, hear the dull incomprehensible mumble of indistinct conversation, and feel the rhythmic tramp of synchronous marching. Holding his breath, the Forester continued forward.
The others had a similar experience to Logan, though Lord de Trobliand simply made huge strides with every step, Liza had a much better sense of balance, Glib generally had an easy time of it, Dr. Moller was forced to raise the edges of her leather skirt, and Karlen lagged behind but clambered from large stone to large stone with surprising ease.
Finally Mera took up the rear of the group, slinking along the narrow aqueduct like a cat on a fence concerned about being spotted, which he was, based on his uneasy glances down at the new column of Other Man infantry simultaneously marching under the structure’s archways. The dragon wondered if he could take on this mass of enemy troops if somehow spotted, then decided that the entire mission would be doomed regardless of the outcome if that happened, so he just gulped and continued to sneak on by.
Luckily, for Logan’s party, the half-risen moon was not bright at all, and the figures quietly moving atop the structure were lost into the dark sky.
After what seemed like an eternity but was actually only a few minutes, the members of this strikeforce crossed one-by-one to the safety of the other side. Sufjan immediately swung to continue keeping an eye on the enemy troops as the rest of the group sat around a large stone and tried to calm themselves down.
The Sabine soon joined the rest of the team. “Nothing. We got past unscathed.”
“Good.” Lord de Trobliand stated.
“Lucky.” Liza responded.
“Always been.” Glib chuckled.
“Horse-headed ghost lady my ass.” Karlen mumbled.
Dr. Moller looked back at the marching troops now in the distance. “Haha.” She wrote in her notepad, then wiped the slate. “There’s so many Northerners marching down. Could we do anything to block them?”
Glib immediately began rifling through his pack. “Well, with some of my stuff here I can probably blow up a span and collapse the-”
“No.” Lord De Trobliand interrupted. “We could destroy this aqueduct, but it may also draw attention to ourselves. The war is reaching its culmination: Anhake is throwing everything into this campaign. Even if we stop the Other Men here, there are other routes for them to march South. No, our mission to rescue the Dragon Queen may be the single most important action we can do.”
Logan looked up. Mera had already gotten halfway up onto the rocky slope. The dragon turned his head, beckoning for the humanoids to follow.
The Forester nodded in response, getting up to his feet again and swinging his pack back onto his back. He looked over the other members of the party, clearly exhausted from the long, stressful journey through the night.
“Well, the rescue mission is why we’re here isn’t it? Let’s go on.”

Imagine it from the perspective of the Other Men. Some C.O. scolds his troops “How could you miss a dragon walking above you?”
Lol. To be fair, the aqueduct is far higher and the night darker than depicted. Some artistic license needed to actually display everyone.
Fair enough. Like night scenes in a movie. Though a mean C.O. might not buy that.
So, when he's released from his uhh third captivity in the king's residence
