PrideToons 3/4 - Bisexual
Perhaps my most self-indulgent project this year (so far), this little collection is meant to display characters from some of my favorite animated series and films who are either canonically some flavor of LGBT or who many fans - myself included - consider LGBT.
Are there alternate bi pride flags? I think I've only ever seen this one.
Characters and their crushes are listed from left to right.
Jake + Tallstar and Nutmeg, Warrior Cats, Semi-canon - The "semi-canon" comes from how the books never use the word "bisexual" to describe Jake, but like, c'mon. He's the dad of like half the important characters in the series, obviously the kinda guy who likes women, but the most character development he receives comes from his affair with the male Tallstar/Talltail. This is one of those cases where it's really hard not to read their relationship is gay, and I tend to think that was the point. Kids' media from yesteryear isn't famous for being open about its LGBT characters, but there's a lot of coding in place for characters like Your Dad here.
Charlie B. Barkin + Itchy Itchiford and Sasha la Fleur, All Dogs Go to Heaven franchise, Fanon - I considered representing Chuck's female attraction with Flo instead of Sasha, but I doubted anyone familiar with the franchise would recognize her in the abstract. So Sasha lol. Anyway, I like to think of Charles as bi given he both chases after girls AND has a lifelong partnership kinda deal going on with Itchy. Yeah, yeah, het men, I get it, having a best buddy isn't gay. Renting an apartment with him, sabotaging his job so as to keep him from leaving you, and referring to him as "your partner" every chance you get, though? That's just plain flaming.
Sunset Shimmer + Twilight Sparkle and Flash Sentry, MLP: FIM, Canon - Yet another LGBT-confirmed colorful horsie! This show really did spoil us with same-gender attracted rep, huh? I can't remember who on the staff confirmed this as canon, but I'm sure the evidence is only a Google search away. Sunset isn't really my favorite MLP character, but she IS a very good one regardless. I wish every reformed villain in the series was as well-developed, thoughtful, and human (or pony?) as Shimmer is. She was confirmed bi during a time when kids' TV was becoming more accepting of overt LGBT rep, and I think that's pretty cool.

I actually am also in the Charlie is bi camp. Technically I suppose you could call Charlie and Itchy's relationship more of a bromance but I think it's more likely that men in the 80s and early 90s weren't really comfortable with coming out as anything but straight yet. As well as the 30s, when the first All Dogs Go to Heaven movie took place in. (Or was it the 40s?)
