Imagine that you discover a river unlike any other. One whose currents do not just sweep its waters to distances beyond but your humanity too. One that passes through the cracks and crevices of your form to give rise to the otter beneath your crust of human facade. As you swim, you can feel your body adapting to a life that is perfect for the rivers many streams. One that is able to hunt fish with ease with only the smallest flicks of its rudder-like tail, float on top of its bubbling pools with specialized fur, and chase after playmates in graceful games of underwater tag with webbed paws.
Life would be like a dream. Days spent exploring a body that quickly was becoming your own while memories of what once was steadily drifted away like leaves on a current.
Of course, you know in the back of your mind that you could always go back. To step away from the river and become what you once were. To feel the firmness of humanity once again anchored onto your features.
But would you want to?
Otters hold a special place in my heart. They are such unique animals that combine so many of my favorite features, including webbing and long, thick tails. They are playful and intelligent creatures that are well adapted for an environment that humans could only dream of being a part of.
As such, I think if I were to ever become an otter, I don't think I would complain much at all.
