I got the urge to do a proper pencil piece again today. Been a while. I've been limiting my pencil work to rough sketches so much recently, that sometimes I have to remind myself just why I have five different eraser types in my pencil bag, and how important they are to my pencil art process.

Always wondered about what it is exactly about that. It might be the push-pull between "loose sketch" and "refined rendering." The roughness of the pencil lines, smudges, etc., versus the tightened contours, smooth careful shading, varying line thickness, etc.
(There's an analogy in there somewhere with playing guitar, but I can't quite nail it down. Something about a system where the expression-to-action ratio approaches 1:1 just feels good.)
