I don’t remember the last time that I visited a bar with my father. Beer is something so disgusting that I don’t know how my father and few friends drink it with such facility and pleasure; it isn’t different from these people. They don’t have beer and their drinks are nothing that call my attention to taste. The pig was with his gourd by side while drinking at cup; Tanuki is participating at party too, drinking the same what the man asked, but making an ugly face by the strong flavor; I am just eating cold fish of big quality. They are good to cook, this I can answer.
I look around sometimes and I still see eyes over me. They are hungry and ambitious to capture me suspecting that I am the kitsune that will bring chaos and pain for the village – if I have ability to disappear with one snap. This would be useful for one thing.
– Drink should be awful for you, fox – the pig called my attention. I still think horrible the man of only one eye and ear. – Don’t you like to drink nothing?
– I don’t. I never was a fan of this kind of place. I am alright with fish – despite that I would like a soda to compensate the cold taste. These Japanese put some strong seasoning that I don’t know from restaurants.
– What is a pity! It’s the most common place that you will find in peace – he turned up the cup to take more sips. I don’t know what would be peaceful drinking around of people and lose sense. – I like to visit your side sometimes. They are good to prepare drinks better than these people – he cleans the mouth.
– And how do you hide your other… eye? – my question wasn’t occult enough to despite my fear to talk to a man of one eye, but he reacted with a laugh.
– Black lens and hats are my disguises – he wanted to mean “glasses”. He talking to me is being energetic because Tanuki is quiet as rock. – You have a delicious drink that I always carry at my gourd that is strong than every hot drink. You call them of kashasa – he lands his hand on the gourd balancing.
– Ah! You mean “cachaça” – he laughed agreeing with the correction. – It’s really a strong drink. Do you like it?
– How not? Drinks should be hot and delicious to let us happy.
This is what I always heard from some friends and colleagues when they talk about drinks, mainly beer; they already asked me if I drank to be “happy”. I wanted to understand why they see happiness getting drunk and behaves as stupid and, if the unluck appears, be recorded to be shared at WhatsApp. I never will understand them.
– Being real – the pig continued –, you can find several reasons to fill the peace at this side of Sunomono.
– We thank you a lot for your considerations – Tanuki pulled the topic, finally –, but we are having other reasons to visit the village. First, I am introducing the place for him and we are looking for a temple. Personal stuffs.
I’m cold when Tanuki talks; I am afraid that he says about me being his master and the doubt if I am a kitsune and look for Amaterasu, being it the reason that I try to kick his lower leg when possible.
– I can comprehend – the pig pulled the topic. – Ah! I almost forgot to introduce our names. Who are you, Tanuki?
I think interesting this question. He asks his name saying his species. Or is another name? I don’t know anymore.
– I am Ken Yoshihiro, the Wind Guardian. You look like uncommon.
– Answer yourself – he smirks. – I am Katakirauwa.
– Catati… What a difficult name to pronounce! – I commented with a difficulty just to remember the first syllable. – Are you any retired soldier?
– Retired? – he laughed a lot. He was breathing something strong like alcohol and his mood to behave doesn’t put me in comfort, if Japanese know what is alcohol. – I am a wizard. I am not so old to retire.
His laugh is strong and outstanding, loud at point to call attention of some eyes, mainly at table where I am, the center of deep desires. The way that he behaves, talk and until drink are points and indicative of someone old. But his name is very ugly for him. Maybe Japanese doesn’t have good taste for names.
Says the fox that is called Vanderlei!
– Wizard, yes? – Tanuki put his elbows over the table and hands under the chin, pulling an air of curiosity. – I never thought that a Katakirauwa could be wizards.
– Just because kitsunes are the only one capable to manipulate elements and supernatural instincts? – one doubt is born in my mind. Tanuki looked with the eyes opened and nodding, surprised how he has the right words to speak while I try to reason about wizards. – Kitsunes can be powerful, but not the only one. Yokais can demonstrate occult powers of unimaginable immensity. Even the Gods and God’s sons can make a big effect at duel. You should understand about it.
– Hey! Don’t grab too heavy with me – he buffed. – I am locked for more than two thousand years inside of porcelain vase. My Master who freed me.
Automatically my leg kicked his that made him give a jump of scare. The pig doesn’t look to change the mood before this declaration, but I was who changed at shame and fear. I was hoping that Tanuki kept quiet to not share this story of I being his master and now I should hope that nobody heard this phrase. Only the pig that was looking at me with curiosity of one eye and the smile that are being a torture looking like a psychiatrist session, penetrating my soul; I am stuttering trying to think what I can explain. He doesn’t look someone to trust; it’s enough Kona.
– Well – I tried to say with the head down together with the ears and shoulders up – Tanuki saved me from assault and other threats.
– Including other Yokais – he completed just to let clarified that he saved me without needing to say from who. The pig looked at him.
– I can’t imagine that a Wind Guardian is wasting his power to protect against fool threats.
– Hey! – Tanuki closed the face against the comment. – This isn’t an easy task to protect someone.
– I know – he took other sip and continued – but for a Wind Guardian you should fight against big and powerful Yokais.
– Like Kamaitachis?
I remember exactly the first demon that smashed me with his disgusting foot over the grass and others two with chains. They are big, strong, rough and wild, not forgetting the crazy with blades on the arms. I told about them to the pig and how horrible they were for me, what made him laugh from my nightmares. I can understand it as sarcasm or just funny. Tanuki isn’t enjoying his behavior.
– Onis are big, but not powerful. They are fool creatures ambitious for power, but lazy in brain – the pig mocked. – Kamaitachis are fast and crazy to provoke typhoons. I could tell you a list of dangerous Yokais for you to be careful, but the numbers are impossible to count. You don’t have idea how this world is big and little, young. Look around yourself.
I had the unpleasure to hear his ask and obey just to see creatures and weird images together at this bar like if everyone here has problem with nobody. The appearances are in another topic. Animals, talking objects, weird faces, maybe there are ETs here.
– Can you say half of them who they are? – the pig proceeded with his theory while my eyes are watching the people. – They are villagers that work to put their houses and family saved, can be hunting, planting, being a warrior or even a guider; others are Yokais and Yureis, spirits and creatures that are born from the death for some purposes, being blessing, curse or pranks. This is because I say that the world is a fantastic infinity of histories and legends that each one carries over their back to share for the present.
Even he being philosophical, I didn’t like when I heard that there are several creatures being possible to hunt me, making me look back again and see a crowd on their chairs drinking while the occult eyes are over me in a possession never seen before. I should know that I am not safe.
– You should understand very well these stories and Yokais, but I didn’t learn your name – I commented turning to him and shirking my head around shoulders. Tanuki was paying attention while takes a sip.
– Maybe my species is difficult for you. My name is Yūdokuna Kiba.
Worse name to memorize. Why has everyone difficult names? Just when Tanuki hit the cup on the table with an opened expression.
– Katakirauwa – he said other ugly word. – I remembered.
– What did you remember? – I asked squatting of curiosity.
– They are a kind of cursed pigs that steal your soul if they cross between your legs.
I was trying to join the pieces and solve this puzzle. A cursed pig and steal souls are characteristics from someone with big power. Just after that my head opened and I reacted in shock.
– Are you a Yokai?
Tanuki nodded agreeing and telling more about these creatures that they are seen in big quantities when in group, and when alone they prefer to steal souls for their own fun; together they are usually under orders of someone bigger. Together or alone, Yokai is demon and demon shouldn’t be trustful. Yudoku… ku… Kiba! – this is easier to learn. Kiba was laughing from my face, of course. My expression of fear is notable thanks by the great reception. Nothing better than this.
– Did you already meet one Katakirauwa, Ken? – Kiba asked with wish to know.
– Never – the world giving a slap on my face with this fantastic answer –, but I heard about them from my old Master. He said that they are usually skillful with magics.
– It’s true. You are intelligent too – the comment that made him smile in big pride thanks to his knowledge. Tanuki shouldn’t know what is sarcasm. Taking the time to take the sip, Kiba looked at me with a simple smile that tries to calm me. – Don’t need to worry with it, Vanz. I won’t cross your legs and steal your soul.
I don’t know if I can consider it a relief or warning. I am trusting in nobody that comes from this crazy side of Sunomono, mainly Yokais. These people are trying to steal me to eat. But even with his comment and way to look, I was trying to smile and keep the conscious cleaned. Kiba can be ugly and disgusting, but he is being a little help and the conversation is being well, mainly to learn more about these Yokais.
Tanuki was drinking the last sips and hit the cup on the table satisfied. He was stretching his members while I and Kiba were watching him.
– I thank you for the drink, Kiba, but Master and I should return to our home – I looked with relief impossible to hide. I fail on it easy. Again, I looked behind me and some eyes focused on our table, attentive where I am going. – We have still other task to do.
– It’s a pity that the time was shorter than I thought… – he coughed a little – I who thank you all for this afternoon. Just don’t try to call attention next time – he laughed together with Tanuki. I wanted to have the same moods than them, but I am the hunt at story.
– We will try. I thank you very much, Kiba – I replied with maximum education possible. – Are you always here?
– Usually yes, but don’t need to return here if you don’t want – it was being in part good. – We hope to meet other time and have a good drink. And this time – he looked at my bowl with one fish missing – I hope that you share your drink with us.
– I don’t promise nothing, but I try to give a good conversation for you.
I had nothing to answer after this. Kiba smiled grateful by our fast and sudden meeting at bar and lifted the empty gourd while Tanuki bended to greet the presence and healthy conversation. I didn’t want to get away from Tanuki not even ten centimeters. The security is priority for me at this crazy world. I don’t have courage to discover more about the village and neither if I am able to endure all this suffering.
Before we go out from the bar, I looked back and Kiba was still looking at me with the head down and one eye lifted. His dark eyes froze my soul for a strange reason that I fear to guess if he is trustful or if all this is a prank. But thanks God that we went out from this uncomfortable place.
– This place is crazy, don’t you think, Master – Tanuki asked to me with a smile that I still want to learn where he takes it from.
– Let’s return to my home and we talk better there.
He agreed and he must if not I would run and scream again at this village.
