A little animation challenge I did in January this year for no real good reason. Was fun.
I had a REALLY hard time making a decent looking GIF under the filesize limit. Wish FA supported .webm or something. Finally managed to do a conversion that looks good.

You could try using the APNG format (animated PNG). Here's an example of someone posting one on FA.
APNG was designed to have a lower file size compared to GIF, and superior color depth too. The downside is that it's not supported by all browsers (but I think Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge are the only major exceptions).
