Letters to Levon the Christian Lion: #19
Translations provided by the Avenger; both letters were written in Armenian.
Dear Levon:
In the Bible, there was a time when people tried to build the Tower of Babel to reach God, or at least from my understanding. God scattered the people across the earth by confusing their languages, where they moved to different parts of this world to develop their own communities with their own languages. Today, we have translators, assisted with technology, and we're sending people into outer space to explore the galaxies. On top of this, we have space forces to observe the skies and space for any threats. So now I'm curious: what does God think about space exploration made possible by us when the Tower of Babel failed?

Levon's reply:
Dear Ghukas:
The Tower of Babel is a matter of debate as to what the motivation was, but allow me to recap Genesis 11:1-9 for you:
1 Now the whole world had one language and a common speech.
2 As people moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there.
3 They said to each other, “Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar.
4 Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.”
5 But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building.
6 The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.
7 Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.”
8 So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city.
9 That is why it was called Babel—because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth.
So you are correct to say that the idea was to reach the heavens. However, that was not God's intention. He wanted them to diversify; thus, because they were disobedient in their acts, He did something to force them to obey His commands to diversify. Thus, everybody was scattered over the face of the whole earth when He twisted and scrambled all the languages of the world.
I don't think God has a problem with space explorations, because it does allow us to see the brilliance of the universe He created, and it shows what a genius He truly is. The fact the Americans put the first men on the moon is one of the greatest things that country has ever done, and the fact they beat the Russians to the moon also shows why God made them the most powerful and prosperous nation on the planet.
Will He allow colonizations of other planets, however? No. I don't think He will; He intentionally made the universe so that only the planet Earth can have life on it. (Obviously, that's changed with all those cartoon characters coming to life via CNG affecting autistic individuals, one of which was Cripto, and so we have the Biker Mice from Mars, for example, plus the mouse population living on Mars. God is not angry with that, though, because He wrote the book on history, and so he knew that was going to happen. But originally, he did not want life on Mars. He only wanted life on this earth.)
I hope that helps, and thank you for writing to me.
In His Service,
Father Levon Zakaryan, a.k.a. Levon the Christian Lion

How do you feel about space travel? I've heard stories of people wanting to colonize the moon, Mars, and likewise; I've always felt God would not allow that to happen.
Zax: Elon Musk has argued it is possible for people to colonize other planets, even though it is arguably resource intensive.
Juno: I think Levon meant that in the argument of mankind trying to set up civilization of other planets.
Chuong: Which is why in my own views and opinions, the Bible is not that easy to understand, almost in a similar way how enlightenment is interpreted in Buddhism and how that differs from the European enlightenment movement.
Juno: There was also a time period in Italy when Galileo Galilei caused controversy with the Catholic Church by claiming that the sun was the center of the galaxy instead of Earth.

Super C: In the end, though, everybody had to admit Galileo told the truth about the sun being the center of our solar system.
Levon: Yes, Juno; that's exactly what I meant, although I do not believe He wants people to even try to colonize other planets either. But that's just me. I don't know for certain.

Wow I didn't know he insulted a Catholic vicar. That's probably what struck the Catholic Church's nerves.
Was Copernicus tried for anything? I found the explanations you gave Chuong about Galileo quite fascinating.
