Sarge was midway through painting Syd's belly when he stopped short. No matter how he squinted his eyes, he could swear there was a thick, black outline where Syd's scutes were. "Odd."
"What?" Syd asked.
"I didn't know the in-between of your scutes was all black like! Is it like a scar or something?"
"Black? No, it's blue and grey!" Syd tried to look down at himself, but he seemed to have difficulty hefting up his belly. Now that Sarge mentioned it, Syd's legs were feeling a bit stumpier, and his belly seemed a lot... bigger than it was supposed to. "I know we usually like to inflate each other into balloons around this time, Sarge, but... I don't see a hose on me. Didja, per chance, happen to give me one of your Fluffmaster's Air Eclairs again?"
"No, I stopped making those during my... uh... recovery." Sarge gestured to his chest fluff, which seemed to be mostly scar-free. "I was just smart enough to read basic recipes -- eclairs were the hardest ones to make."
"Right, right." Syd nodded as he looked over at Sarge. His eyes widened. "Sarge! Why do you have an outline? When did you have a prominent nose?!"
Sarge confusedly crossed his eyes. "Oh my word. When did this happen?" Much like Syd, Sarge tried to examine his belly. As he did so, he heard his pants begin to rip at the seam. "Syd! I think something's happening!"
"You're telling me, Sarge!" Syd grimaced. "You look more pear-shaped than you did before! Your belly is more prominent than usual!"
"Speak for yourself!" Sarge replied, panicked. He then looked at the paint he held in his hand. "This all started when we painted- oh... Wait! This isn't "Balloony Paint", It's "Toony Paint"!
Syd grumbled. "Well... that would explain why I'm seeing an outline." Syd tried to wipe a bit of the green paint from the top of his belly. "I... hope this is water-soluble."
