"I was really scared of turning thirty. Thing is, the fears weren't entirely unfounded. I mean, I still can't drive, I'm still overweight, I'm still unemployed and I still live under someone else's roof. I guess that's what happens when you're lower class and live in America - the job market's brutal, nobody's hiring and you can spend a year learning something and still get basically no bites. It sucks. Especially when you're scared of what the country thinks of people like you, you know? It's scary. Turning 30 wasn't scary because of a number, but the ever-present reminder that time's passing by that I can't get back."
She pauses for a moment, brow furrowed, voice echoing the hoarseness of her heart, but smiles, "But I keep thinking about how much good's happened in the last three years, you know? I mean... I moved across the country with nothing on a huge gamble. I shacked up with my long-now-immediate-distance girlfriend and like, we've had our struggles but we made it work. We're together for good. I integrated into her friend group damn near like I'd always been there, just one of the guys, and... like, even though I'm looking to move? Jersey's the most home anywhere's ever been, man. The last three years weren't a waste, and hitting the big three-oh is a lot less scary when you've got people who love you."
She takes a sip of her coffee, savoring the flavor. This espresso shop's her favorite place in the country, so she told you - but never is it more clear than when she takes a moment to appreciate what's in her hands, leaning back with a smile.
"That's what you gotta' do. Find the people that make it worth getting to thirty and beyond. They make everything better."
I hit 30 years old on November 4th, and I'd been scared of it for a long time because of how much time's passed and it doesn't feel like I've done a lot, but, that's bullshit and I know it. Done a lot.
