Torched Song
This and the sister picture are reason numero uno that I was gone for a while.
Not this picture. I had it finished in a week.
No. It's the follow-up. Yeah, it's STILL unfinished after all this time. I could NOT finish it. Why? Rigby. Again. I'm getting so sick and tired of doubting his design and changing it over and over and over again.
So, a picture that was almost finished I kept adding more characters to and I kept changing his face design. Ugggh! I want to SCREAM!
So, it'll be somewhat full. I was wondering if I should have offered it as a YCH, but nooooooo, I wanted it to be a SURPRISE! And, nooooooooooooooooooo, it needed to be posted the same day as THIS! Well, screw that! I'll post it when I do! It held up other art too long!
Sorry! Anyway!
The title is based on a song from L. A. Noire, which as you know I was obsessed with months ago when I could play it before... the incidents.
Ana is loosely based on Elsa from the game and thought it was fitting to name at least ONE picture after something related to her.
A torch(ed) song is a expression of unrequited love. Hmm, I wonder who she's feeling that for?
The stage goes dark. A stage light shine down to the left. In walks a gray, svelte mink in a sparkly blue dress. She pads over towards the audience. Grabbing the microphone, she opens her mouth to sing...
She sings with such passion, it brings tears to my (fursona's) eyes. He tries not to let people see him emote, so he sits in the back in the dark. Well, normally. Now... he's got a front row seat. It's okay to let the tears roll down. No one will judge you, buddy.
The snooty patrons in the back probably don't even care! She sings her heart out and they talk among themselves! How rude! Well, at least she has a few fans.
Soon, near the climax of the song, a singular tear rolls down her cheek. Was it just a performance or is there someone truly she longs for?
This was a passion project of mine and I felt it held up over all this time! I poured a lot of time into it and I feel it paid off! I kept trying to post it at night, but because of my daytime sleep schedule posting at the "peak hours" was almost impossible.
Later, I never got the time to post at ALL, so I gave up. I waited way too long, though.
So, I pushed to test new things on here, so consider it a science experiment. Muahahahahaha!
For one, I started getting the hang of using gradients, something I dreaded for YEARS. I still cannot do multi-gradients like rainbows and such, but I'm still learning! I used them to make the background have a faux vintage "painted cel" look. Since no artist seems keen on sharing how they make their art look vintage or like cels 🙂 ("just fool around with settings!" 🤪), it's the best I could do. *deep sigh*
Secondly, I DREW A BACKGROUND HOLY CRAP! I HAVEN'T DRAWN A BACKGROUND IN FOREVER! I normally just use tools or free stock art I edit, so this was big for me! I referenced it from a few stock art/photo sites, as I never drew a detailed floor before, but . The curtains I basically drew on my own and made them asymmetrical to look more "realistic". I figured boring symmetrical curtains would look less dynamic.
Her pose was also referenced from different sources. I had to look up Lounge singers and it's heavily referenced from a photo of Billie Holiday. I wasn't going to draw her crying originally, but the pose and face expressed pain to me for some reason and the current look and pose were born.
I honestly like drawing my characters upset or in pain sometimes. It's cathartic. Maybe it's because I'm usually sad offline and need an outlet for my emotions. So, despite my cutesy style, I'm not as bright and happy as I seem. Ironically, this picture makes me happy to look at. Not in a dickish, sadistic way... just... I don't know. Maybe it's for the same reason happy art makes me mad sometimes? Maybe I'm bitter I'm not happy anymore? Maybe seeing sad art feels "real" or relatable to my existence and it brings me comfort? Who knows? (Look at me playing armchair psychiatrist...)
I'm sorry for boring you with my words.
