The cat didn't come up to yowl at the kitchen door at dinner time. My brother found the cat staring at the coffee can over the drain pipe opening. When he lifted it, the rat ran along the wall past me. The cat cornered it under an old couch. We dispatched the intruder later.

Had that happen with a local blockage (Aw, Poop!) in the upstairs apartment (I jointly own a two-family, I occupy the first-floor apartment). Went thru the floor and soaked the drywall in my bathroom and even ran into the basement following the pipe chase. (Part Poo)
As part of the drywall repairs, I had maintenance hatches installed in the ceilings directly beaneath the toilets. In the event of a repeat, I can pop the hatch and stick a catch pan in the space to save the drywall.
