K-O's Kartoons: New Adventures of Pinocchio - Paunchy Pou...
In loving memory of the recently-deceased Jules Bass, the other half of Rankin/Bass Productions, my Thanksgiving weekend guest K-O the Kangaroo is watching a 1961 episode of Rankin/Bass's very first production, "The New Adventures of Pinocchio" stop-motion animation TV series. The episode is "Paunchy Pouch," featuring a kangaroo that had been shoplifting from a department store and stuffing the stolen goods in his pouch. (Yep, a male cartoon kangaroo with a pouch, like K-O!) The kangaroo has a somewhat abstract design, as this was back when Rankin/Bass's character designer was Antony Peters, who often went with a more stylized look for the characters, before the studio hired Paul Coker Jr. (who also died a few months ago), and he speaks in a really stereotypical Australian accent to the point where he's using more British tics (like calling others "Guv'nor") than traditional Aussie ones. I'm not sure who did his voice.
Also around that time, Rankin/Bass's other TV series, the hand-drawn animated "Tales of the Wizard of Oz," did a kangaroo episode as well: "Boomer Rang," which I previously showed here.
Sorry about the picture quality on my screen; you can see the cartoon here to get a good look...
