And now, for something completely different
A bit of a fanart of the main PoV species of the sci-fi web original story (HFY sub-genre) The Nature of Predators by SpacePaladin15. The link to the first part is here: https://www.reddit.com/r/HFY/commen....._of_predators/
It's one of the goods ones, I ignored rest to catch up when I first found it. The author trims a lot of fat, writes a very lean narration, and clearly has a tale to tell, unlike the regular HFY fare where the story is clearly just there to explore one particular thought the author once had.
For those unfamiliar, the premise of any HFY story is, it's sci-fi, often around humanity's first contact with sapient alien life - but unlike in other sci-fi settings, where humans are the underdogs, or more commonly the jack-of-all-trades unremarkable types, the HFY humans are in fact exceptional in space, as a species. Usually, it has to do with humans being larger, stronger, faster, very commonly extremely durable by interstellar standards. HFY stands for "Humanity Fuck Yeah", as the original short stories from 4chan boards were tongue-in-cheek subversions of the sci-fi genre tropes and stories of human dominance in one way or another.
In NoP, humans are exceptional in a different way - they're predators. The galactic federation of several hundred space-faring species is composed *exclusively* of herbivorous prey animals.
The story has a very strong emotional core as well, due to the nature of the venlil here - it's not atypical for HFY stories to not have humans as the PoV characters - who are so preyish and emotional, and feel so strongly, some nearly faint at the mere sight of a single human being, and start to surrender to panic upon making eye contact with one. Their internal monologue and how much emotions suffuse them makes them quickly and deeply likeable.

This is the polar opposite of what an Inkanyamba post usually is and I'm loving it.
Huh that's a really neat concept for a scify story. Kinda surprised I haven't seen something similar in media before...
We are awfully good at killing each other unfortunately

On the one hand, as sketchysynth noted, this is the polar opposite of what you normally do.
On the other hand, most The Nature of Predators non-humans react to humans in the same way people react to your snakes, so I'm surprised that I'm so unsurprised by this.

Humans don't *like* that though; and it's a nice glimpse into the mind of the prey~
You know, if you like The Nature Of Predators, you'd probably like this one:

Same sort of "humans are one of the few predatory species in the universe" concept as The Nature Of Predators; it's just that, instead of a wide-scale first contact story, it's a foot-tall alien chipmunk who has what I can best describe as a pred/prey fetish for humans (less sexual than the word "fetish" implies, though, and more "their wires are crossed regarding what they find attractive").

Look at it. Smol and adorable, pure and incapable of thought. Yet it is fluffy, yet it is warm. But what of its flavor? Its essence? What secrets does it hide in its fluff and the glaze of its eye? Can it survive the terror of a sneezing human? A true enigma of the modern era.
Excellent depiction of the creature. Let it fuel your passions like a screaming battery spinning in a tea cup.

La creatura is yet to be fully explored, the fluff and the fuzz conceal secrets in multitudes
Thank you~
Thank you~
Can't stop reading it thanks to you! Thank you for pointing out this gem!
HFY commonly has that effect - glad to see this one is gaining some traction~
not a single thought behind those big empty eyes~ fucking adorable XD
One of the latest chapters, Tarva was mentioned to be unable to salute like a human due to her species' physiology. Will that change how you interpret the Venlil?
Part 69, quote: "...I raised my paw awkwardly, pressing the pad down against my ear. The humans had a good-natured laugh at my discomfort, and the leader extended a clawless hand in greeting..." - I see no physiological inability, only perhaps simply an awkwardness in forming her "paw" in the same manner as a human hand may be. This is already covered in my design interpretation by the smaller, stubbier, padded three-digits-plus-thumb paws
Thank you for helping adjust my views, and correcting my misinterpretation of the text.
Huh... here I've been reading the main series for months and never thought to check for any fan art.
Oh, the discord sever and r/NatureOfPredators have a lot more for you, excellent fanfics and art both~
Yep, that is exactly how i imagined a Venlil, smol and very much worth of all the headpats.
